Cop suspended over doctor assault
UDALGURI: Chirang Police suspended a sub inspector rank police officer serving as Officer-in-Charge of Amguri PS in Chirang district after he allegedly assaulted a doctor and two of his accomplices for not wearing masks on Sunday.
According to reports the victims, Dr. Madhurjya Kakati, a doctor serving at Amteka Mini PHC , along with accountant of the MPHC Nitu Das and a pharmacist Raju Boro returned to the quarter of Kakati at Amteka area in Chirang but later ventured out without masks when a police team led by the officer allegedly charged them batons and made them kneel down.
Dr. Kakati told mediapersons "After returning from duty, I lost the keys of my room and hence went out to find it with them. At that moment a police patrol car arrived there and they rebuked me with slang language for not wearing mask. I said them that I am a doctor and just ventured out to find my keys and because of the urgency I missed to wear the mask. I even accepted that I made a mistake. But they forcefully compelled me to kneel down in public place and then charged batons on us".
Subsequently following a complaint and public condemnation ,SP Chirang suspended Doley on Monday with immediate effect charging him of 'gross misconduct' and 'dereliction of duty' . "During his period of suspension,his headquarter will be at police reserve ,Chirang. He shall draw sustenance allowance admissible as per government norms" the order read.
Earlier,on Monday Junior Doctors Association(JDA) and Guwahati Medical College and Hospital(GMCH) condemned the assault on their alumnus and former member of JDA and decided to observe 'black day' on May 27 by wearing black badges while performing their duty.

Sensation prevails in the area following the killing of one Jairam Thikda by his fellow friend Agartosh Kerkata at Nalapara under Dimakuchi PS of Udalguri on the night of Satrurday last. Reportedly both the persons were consuming alcohol together, when a scuffle broke out between the two over some petty issues Agartosh Kerkata gave a fatal blow to Jairam Thikda which resulted in the death of the later. A wild loner jumbo created havoc and ransacked number of houses in Barmukoli village under Panery PS of Udalguri on Sunday morning. The wild jumbo also lashed one Benzamin Tirkey (45) of the same village resulting in death of the person. Police have sent his body for post-mortem to Udalguri Civil Hospital. Lately, a herd of wild jumbos have strayed in search of food and created havoc in the district. The wild jumbo also ransacked houses of Ratiram Boro, Ganesh Boro, Benarus Kasuwa. Man-Elephant conflict in Udalguri district has taken worst turn in recent times. A loner jumbo created havoc in Nalapara area of Udalguri district bordering Indo-Bhutan on Saturday morning. In a significant judgment to rising cases of human trafficking cases and demonstrating how seriously police and the courts will deal with people traffickers in state the Udalguri district court of Assistant Session Judge Roushan Lal sentenced two persons found guilty for their attempt of human trafficking to a term of three years and six months in jail. The Udalguri district unit of AKRSU have condemns the incident of vandalization of partly constructed Chilarai Bhawan near Tangla College by miscreants.
