UDALGURI: The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of newspaper reports of the alleged incident of police atrocities on a doctor in Chirang district on Friday.
AHRC has issued a notice to the District Magistrate, Chirang to cause an inquiry into the incident where media reports stated that the Officer-in-Charge of Amguri PS in Chirang District not only assaulted Dr. Madhurjya Kakati, in-charge of the Amteka Mini PHC but also made him to kneel down along with two others for not wearing masks.
AHRC has asked the District Magistrate, Chirang, to make an inquiry into the incident and submit detailed report before the Commission within one month of receipt of the notice.
Pertinently on May 26, Dr. Madhurjya Kakati, a doctor serving at Amteka Mini PHC , along with accountant of the MPHC Nitu Das and a pharmacist Raju Boro who accompanied Kakato to his quarters of at Amteka area in Chirang ventured out without masks in search of lost keys when a police team led by the officer allegedly charged them batons and made them kneel down.
Subsequently following a complaint and public condemnation ,SP Chirang suspended Officer in charge of Amguri PS, Surachandra Doley for his alleged role in the incident.
