The civil society groups and media persons on Friday paid rich tributes to Bhesaj Ratna Dr Gunaram Khanikar, who left for heavenly abode on early morning of 7 January 2016. The massive earthquake that rattled Assam for nearly a minute claimed 2 persons on Monday morning. Both the casualties have taken place in Guwahati. Identified Raju Bora and Niranjan Das from Maligaon area, died when they were running out of the homes in the earthquake. Guwahati Medical College Hospital alone has been offering treatment to 14 people who sustained injury in the calamity. This is apart from 2 other people who were admitted to the MMCH. Hundreds of buildings and boundary walls including temples and mosques have cracked in the quake across the state. There are reports of damage in the railway tracks.
A huge tremor rocked Assam and Manipur early in the morning on Monday unleashing panic in both the north eastern state. The 6.9 magnitude tremor which originated along the Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur brewed a great deal of damage in Manipur. Cracks are seen in many buildings in Manipur where people in the wee hours ran out to the streets. The tremor was felt nearly one hour creating huge hue and cry among a section of Guwahatians when the clock struck at 4-49 in the morning. Two senior rural journalists of Assam were presented Sangbad Indra Gramya award on Monday by the Journalist Action Committee Assam (JAC)’s Goalpara district unit. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is confident that Congress will retain power for the fourth consecutive term.
