Golaghat: Last Wednesday, an insightful sensitization workshop addressing the detrimental effects of tobacco use was organized at the conference hall of the District & Sessions Judge’s office in Golaghat. The event witnessed the presence of key figures in the fight against tobacco consumption, including Secretary of DLSA Golaghat, Smt. JyotiSmita Sarma, Dr. Sunita Ekka from District Tobacco Control Cell, Golaghat, and Rudhir Prakash Sarma, Divisional Coordinator of Upper Assam Division from The UNION. Officials from the DLSA office and the health department also actively participated.
The workshop commenced with a warm welcome address, followed by an insightful discussion on the provisions of the COTPA Act 2003 by the Secretary of DLSA. Dr. Ekka provided an in-depth analysis of the tobacco burden in Assam and the diverse health implications arising from tobacco use. She took the opportunity to shed light on the achievements of the District Tobacco Control Cell in Golaghat, expressing gratitude to colleagues and stakeholders for their unwavering support.
Rudhir Sarma from The UNION emphasized the importance of a united front to combat the tobacco menace and encouraged collective efforts towards achieving a tobacco-free generation. He urged the attendees to utilize and share information about the toll-free National Tobacco Quitline Services (1800-112-356), established by the Indian government to offer counseling services for individuals keen on quitting tobacco.
The workshop culminated with the Secretary of DLSA, Golaghat, urging all present to refrain from tobacco use, prioritize their health, and disseminate the knowledge acquired during the workshop to their colleagues, friends, and family members. The event showcased a collective determination to work towards a healthier, tobacco-free community.

KMSS president Akhil Gogoi on Saturday came down heavily on Sarbananda Sonowal alleging that the Union minister has not been able to fight for Assam and its people. Local residents in large number in Elengmari area launching an operation in search of the children and women who were washed away on Thursday night. Before that they did not allow the SDRF personnel to launch the search operation alleging inordinate delay. The local youths recovered the ill fated vehicle which met with the mishap when it was carrying a marriage party on Wednesday night before slipping into the flood waters. Four people escaped the death while 8 others went missing. On Saturday 5 bodies were fished out. The search is going on for the remaining bodies, mostly, the children.

Tripura is gearing up for introducing yet another bus service to Dhaka via Kolkata. The bus service is set to be introduced in the first week of September.Transport minister Manik Dey told reporters in Agartala on Friday that two international standard buses are arriving in the capiotal from Bangalore in a day or two. He said that transport department has sent two drivers and one technician to learn all the techniques and procedures to drive the buses and to repair for minor problems.
