KOKRAJHAR: Citizens from various communities, particularly the Bodo community, commemorated the exemplary contributions of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma, former president of the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU), on his 68th birth anniversary, celebrated as 'Student Day' across different districts of Assam with a series of day-long events on Sunday.

In Kokrajhar, the central committee of the All Bodo Students Union, in collaboration with the Upendra Nath Brahma Trust (UNBT) and the Kokrajhar district committee of ABSU, convened at Thulungapuri Dotma amidst a massive turnout of public and student representatives. ABSU President Dipen Boro unfurled the union flag, followed by heartfelt floral tributes to Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma at his tomb and samadhi sthal.

The event witnessed symbolic gestures towards sustainable peace, including the release of balloons and white pigeons by esteemed guests, alongside sapling plantations symbolizing the spirit of the day. Notable figures paying homage to Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma included Dr. Surath Narzary, President of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha, and renowned journalist Rupa Chenoy from Mumbai.

ABSU President Dipen Boro underscored Bodofa's lifelong dedication to the welfare and upliftment of marginalized communities, urging the government to confer upon him the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor, in recognition of his enduring legacy.

"The All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) demands the Bharat Ratna for Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma, a leader revered not only by Bodos but also by students and the underprivileged," stated Dipen Boro, highlighting Bodofa's pivotal role in the Bodoland movement and his vision for a literate society based on the principles of non-violence.

Similar observances took place in Tamulpur, where the Tamulpur district committee of ABSU, in collaboration with local entities, honored Bodofa's memory, with Bodoland Territorial Region's Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro emphasizing the significance of Bodofa's ideals in shaping a brighter future for students.

In recognition of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma's enduring impact, the Assam government officially declared March 31st as 'Chatra Divosh' (Student Day) across the state, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire generations.

The commemoration of Bodofa's birth anniversary underscores his indelible mark on Assam's socio-political landscape, reaffirming the commitment to his vision of empowerment and progress for all.

Tchoukball premier League begin

The first ever Indian Tchoukball Premier League, 2016 has been kicked off from Friday at Govt HS & MP school ground in Kokrajhar district. BTC executive member Doneswar Goyary inaugurated the league. Lightning kills 1

A 42-years-old woman identified as Dane Narzary died when lightning struck today at Pokhalagi village under Gossaigaon police station in the district. She was rushed to RNB Civil hospital in Gossaigaon but the doctors pronounced her brought dead.

Forest dept to evict illegal encrochers

Forest Minister Pramila Rani Brahma has vowed that eviction would be carried out against illegally encroached along the forest land in the state including Saralpara,Ultapani forest areas in Kokrajhar district. Minister Brahma participated at a plant sapling programme at Saralpara No.10 ride along the Indo-Bhutan border in Kokrajhar district on Thursday. Gold for Kokrajhar Kickboxing players

Participants from Kickboxing Association of BTAD won four gold and two silver medals in the ongoing National Kickboxing championship being held at Rajib Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Kerala. The championship started from August 22 with four days programme scheduled. Gold winners are Amar Boro, Pratap Boro, Anima Narzary and Mayuri Deka. Prahalad Basumtary and Bikram Rabha won silvers. 

Body recovered

A body was recovered today at Amlaiguri jungle area under Salakati police outpost in Kokrajhar district.Body was identified as Sabaton Bibi,55;of Salakati.She went missing since August 19 last. Body brought to Kokrajhar for PM.

KLO link man held

A joint team of Chirang Police & 7 Sikh Army apprehanded a KLO linkman in a search operation in the Sakati village, Basugaon in Chirang district. The person was identified as Abinash Ray (22), a resident of  of Srirampur village. One 8 mm pistol (handmade) with  live ammunition  was recovered from his possession. A case has been registered in this regard and interrogation is on.

Peace rally held

A peace rally was carried out at Balajan Tinali market on Tuesday in protest against recent indiscriminate firing along the Tinali bazaar which had claimed 14 lives and 18 others received serious injuries in Kokrajhar district. Hundreds of ralliest from different parts of Kokrajhar and Chirang district participated with banner, placards, which was organized by Lutheran world Services India Trust (LWSIT), Assam unit seeking peace and harmony among all sections of community in the region. NDFB (S) informer held

Police apprehended a suspected over ground worker/sympathizer of NDFB-S identified as Paulina Basumatary 22, wife of a NDFB-S cadre Compounder alias Khaose from No 1 Nandipur village under Kachugaon police station in Kokrajhar district . Police said Rs 15,000 (extorted from Audung Bazar area) have been recovered from her possession which was supposed to be handed over to NDB-S cadre. She was working as a channel of communication between the NDFB-S cadres and over ground worker in that area through her husband. She has been playing a very important role in siphoning off extortion money to the outfit in Myanmar through the OGWs/sympathisers.

Devotees offered Nam Prasangha on the occasion of Shri Shri Madhab Dev Tithi at Sangkhardev Namghar in Kokrajhar on Monday. Maheswar Narzary passes away

Noted writer and Sahitya Akademy awardee Maheswar Narzary passes away on Saturday evening by 4.30 pm due to ailment at his Simbargaon Jainary residence in Kokrajhar district. Narzary has been suffering of his ailment since few months back and breathed his last this evening. He was 78.Narzary received Sahitya Akademy award in 2011 for his ‘Puranni Solo Phitika’ book.He was retired teacher and associated with Bodo sahitya sabha and cultural activities in his life. He had born at Simbargaon Jainary village on March 10, 1938. He was professionally teacher and took retired on 2001.He was also Maharishi in Rupamoni Bathow Dhwrwm.
