Durand Cup Trophy Tour Kicks Off in Kokrajhar with Enthusiasm

Kokrajhar, often referred to as the City of Peace, witnessed a grand kickoff for the trophy tour of the 133rd edition of the Durand Cup 2024, a prestigious football tournament, on Sunday. The event, held at the Bodofa Cultural Complex, Chandamari, saw a significant gathering of sports enthusiasts, citizens, Indian army officials, and government representatives from the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) and Assam.

Assam's Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare, Nandita Gorlosa, along with the Chief Executive Member of BTR, Pramod Boro, and Indian Army officials, flagged off the event. The ceremony marked the arrival of the Durand Cup trophy in Kokrajhar, which was displayed amidst a large and enthusiastic crowd.

Organized by the Indian Armed Forces and supported by the governments of BTR and Assam, this is the second consecutive year that Kokrajhar is hosting the event. The city has gained popularity for its smooth organization of the tournament, reflecting the region's progress and peace.

In his address, Pramod Boro highlighted the significance of hosting the Durand Cup in Kokrajhar, emphasizing the region's transformation over the past 3.5 years from a cycle of violence to an era of peace and progress. He noted that the event's successful hosting is a testament to the pervasive tranquility in BTR today.

"It was a delighted moment to attend the trophy unveiling and flag-off ceremony of the 133rd edition of the Durand Cup 2024 in Kokrajhar, the City of Peace. Football is a passion for all citizens of BTR, young and old. Our government has made assiduous efforts to enhance BTR’s sporting infrastructure and foster an environment of peace where budding sporting talents can blossom and flourish," Boro said. "Kokrajhar is proud to host the historic Durand Cup 2024 once more. This event will give immense impetus to the development of sports, particularly football, in our region. I wish for the smooth success of the Durand Cup, attracting sports lovers and citizens alike," he added.

Minister Gorlosa extended her best wishes and greetings to the Durand Cup organizing committee and emphasized the healthy sporting environment that football fosters. The event also featured a multi-community cultural demonstration, adding to the festivities.

Other notable attendees included Cabinet Minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma, MPs Rwngwra Narzary and Joyanta Basumatary, BTCLA Speaker Katiram Boro, Lt. Gen. RC Srikanth, VSM, Chief of Staff, HQ Eastern Command, Chairman DCOC, and eminent footballer Halicharan Narzary.

Preparations for the Durand Cup football tournament, scheduled to be held from 30th July at the SAI stadium playground in Kokrajhar, are in full swing. The stadium has been beautifully decorated, and the gallery is well-equipped to accommodate spectators.

One drowns at Hell River

A 17-year-old youth has died and another his colleague was rescued after drowning at Hell River at Fakiragram in Kokrajhar. The incident took place on Sunday evening at Dhopertal village along the Hell River. The duo hailed from Maligaon Guwahati visited their reltives house at Fakiragram. They went to the Hell River to have a bath in the afternoon and met the mishap. Local police and SDRF team rushed the spot after the incident recovered one body and another one rescued. Kokrajhar: The Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS) and Bodo community recalled contributions of Subungthini Thandwi Bineswar Brahma, former president of Bodo Sahitya Sabha, and his contribution towards upliftmentof the Bodo literary and language; on his 19th death anniversary at his burial place at Chandamari in Kokrajhar on Monday. Bineswar Brahma remembered

Bodo sahitya sabha and Bodo peoples remembered former president of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha late Bineswar Brahma on his 19th death anniversary on Monday at his burial place Chandamari in Kokrajhar. Brahma was shot by armed militant cadres at his Bhetapara residence in Guwahati in 2000. Six arrested for Witchcraft case in Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR: Police arrested six persons for involved in a witchcraft case at Jhornagra village, Kokrajhar. Police registered a case in this regard themselves. Last Thursday, the village committee of Jhornagra village ordered Badreswar Rabha and his family members to leave the village within a week on suspicion of practicing witchcraft. As soon as Kokrajhar police came to know about the incident, they rescued the family and apprehended six persons including a VDP secretary on Friday evening. Ganja seized

KOKRAJHAR: Kokrajhar police seized 1.80 quintles of ganja illegally carrying in a truck and arrested the driver near Karigaon national highway on Thursday. He was identified as Shyam Kumar Mahato of Bihar. The truck came from Agartala and bound for West Bengal. Police brought the seized under its custody and interogation is on. Police said that market value of the sized Ganja would be amounting of nearly 20 lakhs.

Adhyasradhya of ex MP Charan Narzary

KOKRAJHAR: Adhya sradhya of former MP Charan Narzary is going to be held at his Hatimata residence in Kokrajhar town on Sunday. Narzary breathed his last on July 23 due to age ailments. He was the founding general secretary of the Plains Tribal Council of Assam (now defunct), former MLA from Kokrajhar east, former professor in Kokrajhar Govt College and associated with several organization. NDFB-S cadre held in Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR: Security forces apprehended a hard-core cadre of the National Democratic Front of Boroland-Saoraigwra faction (NDFB-S) on Friday from Samukha Nala area under Bishmuri police outpost in Kokrajhar district. The arrested cadre was identified as Dipak Basumatary @ B. Dwibai @Jolo (23) of Maina Nagar near Bishmuri. He was a Myanmar trained hardcore NDFB(S) cadre of 42nd batch and a member of the Batha Group. One 7.65 mm pistol, a magazine, two live rounds and cash 200 were recovered from his possession.
