Durand Cup Trophy Tour Kicks Off in Kokrajhar with Enthusiasm

Kokrajhar, often referred to as the City of Peace, witnessed a grand kickoff for the trophy tour of the 133rd edition of the Durand Cup 2024, a prestigious football tournament, on Sunday. The event, held at the Bodofa Cultural Complex, Chandamari, saw a significant gathering of sports enthusiasts, citizens, Indian army officials, and government representatives from the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) and Assam.

Assam's Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare, Nandita Gorlosa, along with the Chief Executive Member of BTR, Pramod Boro, and Indian Army officials, flagged off the event. The ceremony marked the arrival of the Durand Cup trophy in Kokrajhar, which was displayed amidst a large and enthusiastic crowd.

Organized by the Indian Armed Forces and supported by the governments of BTR and Assam, this is the second consecutive year that Kokrajhar is hosting the event. The city has gained popularity for its smooth organization of the tournament, reflecting the region's progress and peace.

In his address, Pramod Boro highlighted the significance of hosting the Durand Cup in Kokrajhar, emphasizing the region's transformation over the past 3.5 years from a cycle of violence to an era of peace and progress. He noted that the event's successful hosting is a testament to the pervasive tranquility in BTR today.

"It was a delighted moment to attend the trophy unveiling and flag-off ceremony of the 133rd edition of the Durand Cup 2024 in Kokrajhar, the City of Peace. Football is a passion for all citizens of BTR, young and old. Our government has made assiduous efforts to enhance BTR’s sporting infrastructure and foster an environment of peace where budding sporting talents can blossom and flourish," Boro said. "Kokrajhar is proud to host the historic Durand Cup 2024 once more. This event will give immense impetus to the development of sports, particularly football, in our region. I wish for the smooth success of the Durand Cup, attracting sports lovers and citizens alike," he added.

Minister Gorlosa extended her best wishes and greetings to the Durand Cup organizing committee and emphasized the healthy sporting environment that football fosters. The event also featured a multi-community cultural demonstration, adding to the festivities.

Other notable attendees included Cabinet Minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma, MPs Rwngwra Narzary and Joyanta Basumatary, BTCLA Speaker Katiram Boro, Lt. Gen. RC Srikanth, VSM, Chief of Staff, HQ Eastern Command, Chairman DCOC, and eminent footballer Halicharan Narzary.

Preparations for the Durand Cup football tournament, scheduled to be held from 30th July at the SAI stadium playground in Kokrajhar, are in full swing. The stadium has been beautifully decorated, and the gallery is well-equipped to accommodate spectators.

Home guard dies mysterious death

The death of a homeguard under mysterious circumstance brews no less anger and shock rin Kokrajhar Tuesday. Identified as Hanif Ali (37), he was posted at Bishmuri police outpost who died at a mysterious road mishap on the 31C National Highway early in the morning. He was believed to have crushed to death by a speeding truck as he was on duty. But his family members have alleged that the concern authority has not detailed them about the incident. He hailed from Mokrambil Tulsibil under Gossaigaon sub-division.

NDFB-S cadre held in Chirang

In a joint operation carried out by police and army at Batabari under Bijni PS in Chirang, apprehended a cadre of NDFB-S early this morning. He was identified as Subal Chumpramari alias Suglai. À 9mm pistol (hand made) along with nine live ammunitions recovered.

Villager hurt in elephant attack

A villager is battling with death at a hospital in Kokrajhar after he sustained serious injury in elephant attack. The incident took place in Lungsung forest where a wild elephant attacked him as he was collecting firewood in the forest. Identified as Dhrubajit Brahma, he was rushed to the Kokrajhar Civil Hospital where he is undergoing treatment.

A Boat race competition pulled huge crowd in Kokrajhar along the Chakrashila wildlife sanctuary on Sunday. Huge peoples thronged at the Dheer Bill to see the Boating race competition from different areas of lower Assam districts. Six teams are participating the competition from différent districts like host Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Bongaigaon, Goalpara in the 4th edition of Boat race competition,which has been organised by Alurbhui Munmun Club at Dheer Bill in Chakrashila wildlife sanctuary,famous for golden langur. Baksa lift Goodwill premier league trophy

Baksa district beat Chirang district 2-0 goals to lift the trophy in the final match of the BTC -Army goodwill football premier league-2017 being held at SAI centre in Kokrajhar on Saturday. For Baksa, Golap Basumatary netted first goal in the initial 2nd minutes of the match against Chirang and led the match 1-0 in the first half. Again, Sanjib Deka of Baksa netted another goal in 80th minutes against Chirang which led the team to defeat 2-0 goals and lifted the trophy. 

Congress observes ‘Black Day’ in Kokrajhar

Congress leaders and workers in Kojrajhar observed ‘Black Day’ to mark the one year of demonetization along with other parts of the country.  Daily wage earner and tea estate workers expressed their anger and resented over the government for not availing facilities like ATM services after the country had observed demonetization initiative for the country.  Hundreds of Congress leaders and supporters joined the protest rally holding black flag carried out in Kokrajhar, which was organized by Kokrajhar district Congress committee.    

NDFB-S rebel held in Kokrajhar

Security forces in Kokrajhar claimed to have apprehended yet another NDFB-S rebel along with an over ground worker (OGW) at Dwimuguri village under Panbari police outpost in Chirang district early morning on Wednesday.  Identified as Sukron Basumatary he was held during a combing search operation by  Police and Army at Dwimuguri village. Community fishing at Samoka River

A community fishing drew no less joy on Tuesday at Samarpur Samoka River near Bishmuri in Kokrajhar district on Tuesday. Huindreds of people from all walks of life from different areas thronged at the River since early morning for fishing after the Samoka River Sluice Irrigation opened the water through irrigation project. The river bank looked like festivity situation.    Peoples got huge fishes like Borali,Shool,Bami,Kushia by Jakoi, Dura and some other fishing items which seemed like a festivity situation along the river.
