TISS Guwahati Hosts 11th Convocation, Emphasizing Leadership and Social Impact

Guwahati, 25 October 2024 – Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) Guwahati Off-Campus celebrated its 11th Convocation for the graduating class of 2024 at the Maniram Dewan Trade Centre Auditorium, Guwahati. Distinguished guests included Chief Guest Prof. Gauri Dutt Sharma, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), TISS Chancellor Prof. D.P. Singh, and other dignitaries who gathered to commemorate the achievements of the graduates.

The ceremony began with the lighting of the lamp, accompanied by Saraswati Vandana. In his welcome address, Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Shankar Das congratulated the 165 graduates—five Ph.D. scholars, 112 postgraduates, and 48 undergraduates in Social Sciences—highlighting TISS's commitment to excellence with its A+ NAAC rating and leadership in Social Work education. The Chancellor, Prof. Singh, encouraged the graduates to uphold ethical values and embrace diverse perspectives, as they represented students from 20 states, one Union Territory, and two international countries (Bhutan and Nepal).

Chief Guest Prof. G.D. Sharma awarded medals to thirteen students and delivered a thought-provoking Convocation Address, urging graduates to envision and create transformative change in society. Reflecting on TISS Guwahati’s commitment to serving the unique socio-cultural context of Northeast India, Prof. Sharma emphasized, “The vibrant diversity of Northeast India provides a unique perspective for social scientists. Embrace this diversity as a catalyst for social cohesion, fostering unity in diversity and contributing to a harmonious society.”

In his address, Prof. Sharma also praised TISS Guwahati's curriculum that promotes critical thinking, empathy, and a broad understanding of complex societal challenges. “The social sciences education here fosters critical thinking, cultural understanding, and informed citizenship. This education prepares you to become transformative change agents, building on insights into human behavior, cultural dynamics, and social structures,” he said. He encouraged graduates to bring their skills and education into diverse professional fields, whether NGOs, corporate roles, entrepreneurship, or public service, noting the importance of adaptability and vision in a globalized world.

The convocation concluded with degree conferrals, prize distributions, and a vote of thanks from Prof. Kalpana Sarathy, Dean of the School of Social Work, TISS Guwahati Off-Campus. The event celebrated the academic milestones and future contributions of the graduating class as they step forward to impact society positively.

KOHIMA: Nagaland Chief Minister TR Zeliang is confident that the NPF will retain power to smoothly resolve the decade old political issue. After casting his vote at his local booth, he said, “I hope that polling will finish smoothly. Tribal rights to remain: Hagrama

Kokrajhar: Amid simmering protest over land rights issue of the non Boro people in BTAD areas, an executive BTC body meeting in Kokrajhar agreed said that the general caste cant procure the land rights of the tribals anywhere in the area.   BTAD chief Hagrama Mohilary who chaired te meting said a plot of land is transferable only within the general category people.“The tribal can buy and transfer land from general category. But the general category people can't buy or transfer of tribal plot,” said Mohilary.   .

Explosion at Nagaland voting booth

KOHIMA: A BJP worker sustained serious injury when miscreants exploded a grenade at a polling booth in Nagaland minutes before the commencement of voting in the north eastern state.The explosion took place at 6.30 in the morning at a booth in Tizit, half an hour ahead of polling where the BJP worker who was preparing to represent the party candidate near the booth sustained injury.He was rushed to the hospital and the security forces deployed at the booth premises are still clueless on the miscreants.

EVM malfunctioning disrupts M'laya voting

TURA: Even after the sign of a huge turn out of voters EVM malfunctioning have disrupted polling in dozens of voting booths in Meghalaya on Tuesday.
