8th Chalachitram National Film Festival Concludes, Celebrates Cultural Heritage and Social Awareness

Guwahati: The 8th Chalachitram National Film Festival – 2024 concluded at Jyoti Chitraban in Kahilipara, Guwahati, on October 27, celebrating diverse cinematic works. Jaswandha, directed by Shoneel Yallattikar, won the Best Film in the rest of India category, while A Sylvan Saga by Jyoti Prasad Das was awarded the Best Film in Northeast India. Das also took home the Best Director award, and Abhijit Nayak received the Best Screenplay award for Wrong Number, directed by Bijit Borgohain.

Awards for Best Cinematography went to Angsuman Barua & Pradip Ch Sarma for Aadi Shakti Maa Kamakhya and Chida Bora & Saril Nandan Deka for Teens of 1942 (directed by Samiran Deka). The Best Editing award was presented to Bhaskar Jyoti Bhuyan for Birubala - The Crusader by Dhiraj Kashyap, with a special mention from the jury for A Letter To My Home by Devajani Halder.

Organized by Chalachitram, an initiative of Vishwa Samvad Kendra Assam, the festival showcased 50 documentary and short films in both competitive and non-competitive categories. Themed “Our Heritage, Our Pride,” the event aimed to promote nationalism and celebrate India’s cultural legacy. Topics ranged from heritage and tourism to social reform, arts, and the environment.

The closing ceremony honored winners with cash prizes, trophies, and certificates, attended by notable cine-personalities including Assam’s evergreen actress Mridula Barua, filmmakers Atul Gangowar, Santosh Pathare, and others.

The inaugural screening featured The Last Generation by Prabal Khaund. Competing films included Prayojan (Krishna Das), The Butcher (Tashi Wangshu MJ), and Journey with A Dance Form (Pranjal Pratim Chetia). Non-competition screenings highlighted northeast films such as Being Bald (Krishna Das) and Destination (Dipak Kumar Roy). Films from outside the region included My National Flag (Sweta Kumar Dash) and The Village of Masks (Ritabrita Mitra), among others.

The festival, inaugurated by Cotton University VC Ramesh Ch Deka, featured performances and discussions, drawing young film enthusiasts to Jyoti Chitraban, a campus dedicated to Assam’s pioneer filmmaker Rupkonwar Jyotiprasad Agarwala.

The organizing team, represented by Kishor Shivam and others, hopes to inspire emerging filmmakers to use cinema as a medium for social empowerment, highlighting the rich heritage of Bharat beyond mere entertainment.

Mandarin duck spoted near Assam's Dibru Saikhowa

Probably, for the first time in recent history, a mandarin duck has been spoted near the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park in Assam. Eminent poet and novelist Dr. Neelakshi Chaliha Gogoi informed that the migratory bird has been sighted in the Maguri-Motapung beel situated near the park. “I think the bird has come here due to his mistake. It will attract bird and nature lovers. Now, I request all the concerned authorities to take care of the bird, ” she said. Supreme Court rejects Akhil Gogoi's bail plea

In a setback for the Raijor Dal and its supporters, Supreme Court of India has rejected the bail plea of Akhil Gogoi, on Thursday. The KMSS leader and the president of the Raijor Dal moved the SC challenging the reject order passed by the Guwahati High Court. Hearing the plea earlier today, a three-judge bench of the SC comprising of Justice NV Ramana, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Aniruddha Bose denied bail to the activist. Mob lynching revisits Karbi Anglong

In a horrific incident, a 40-year old man was lynched in a village of Karbi-Anglong on Sunday night. As per reports, a mob of some villagers brutally assulted a man to death. The victim was identified as Monsing Rongpi. He was a resident of  the Karashi Bey village under the Bakalia police station. Rs 240 crore for 7 lakh tea workers

Guwahati: Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman launched distribution of Rs 240 crore to over 7 lakh tea garden workers at a function in Guwahati on Saturday. All these tea garden workers would get Rs 3,000 each  in their bank accounts.   In his address state finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the government was in the process of revising the daily wage amount for the tea garden workers very soon.

18-km-long solar powered fences to protect from wild elephants

Premier biodiversity conservation organisation Aaranyak has installed 18 km of solar powered fence to facilitate human-elephant coexistence at Nagirjuli, Baksa. This initiative will ensure food security and substantial decrease in human-elephant conflict incidents, thus directly benefiting approximately 15,000 people of 35 hamlets in 12 villages. AJP, Raijor Dal to fight polls jointly

Guwahati : AJP and Raijor Dal will fight the upcoming assembly polls jointly.
