Renowned filmmaker and screenwriter Bhaskarjyoti Das passed away on Thursday after a prolonged battle with cancer. He was 51 years old at the time of his demise.
Bhaskarjyoti Das was celebrated for his exceptional work in films like Handuk, Sonar Boron Pakhi, and Bakul Phulor Dore, among others. His screenwriting earned him accolades at both state and national levels. He also served as the co-producer and assistant director for the acclaimed film Antardhan.
His documentary An Unknown Summer was screened at this year’s Kerala International Documentary and Short Film Festival and gained global recognition. The film was also nominated in the Short Documentary category for the prestigious One World Media Awards 2024.
Bhaskarjyoti Das co-directed the film Where Is My Home and was known for his acclaimed documentary I Don’t Want to Be Born Again for Poem. He served as a jury member at the 2nd Guwahati International Film Festival and the 2nd NEFVTA Awards.
Even in his final days, Das was working on the post-production of a new film. His last rites will be performed in his hometown of Tangla.
Filmmaker Jaicheng Jai Dohutia, who worked closely with him on Handuk, remarked, “Bhaskarjyoti Das dedicated his life to cinema. His thoughts, ideas, and creativity began and ended with cinema. His sudden demise is an irreplaceable loss to the world of filmmaking.”
The premature death of Bhaskarjyoti Das has left a void in Assam’s film fraternity. His contributions and inspiring legacy will continue to shine through his body of work.

GUWAHATI: After a brief spell, Guwahati had a narrow escape from a devastating explosion when security forces seized a powerful bomb from a bus in the city. Acting on a tip off, the security forces raided a bus carrying 44 passengers in Basistha where the crude bomb was seized. Later, it was defused in Khanapara.
DUDHNOI: Sensation grips Goalpara town as local residents discovered some black flags fluttering on a tree beside the river Brahmaputra before being seized by police. GUWAHATI: In a bizarre incident that triggers statewide protest, a senior police officer working in the outskirt of Guwahati city has been arrested on a rape charge. DIPHU: The police in Diphu have booked a prisoner four days after he raped a women at the Karbi Anglong Central Jail premises triggering anger and shock across the hills district. According to FIR, the life term prisoner raped the wife of a jail guard as she was alone at the quarters at the jail premises on April 24.
