Journalist Mukesh Chandrakar Found Murdered in Chhattisgarh, Raising Concerns Over Media Safety

The new year began on a tragic note for India's media fraternity, as journalist Mukesh Chandrakar (30) was found murdered in Bijapur, Chhattisgarh, on Friday. His body was discovered in a newly constructed septic tank owned by an influential contractor in Chattanpara. Mukesh, known for his fearless reporting on corruption and insurgency in central India, had been missing since January 1, 2025. His family had lodged a missing person's report shortly after his disappearance.

Mukesh, a seasoned journalist and the creator of the popular YouTube channel Bastar Junction, garnered millions of views for his investigative reports. Local journalists and press organizations have called his death a targeted attack on press freedom, citing his bold exposés of corruption and his advocacy for marginalized communities.

“It is deeply troubling that a journalist who spoke truth to power has been silenced. Mukesh Chandrakar is the first journalist to be killed globally this year, and we demand a thorough investigation to bring his killers to justice,” said Blaise Lempen, president of the Press Emblem Campaign (PEC). Lempen urged Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai to ensure swift justice for Mukesh’s grieving family.

PEC’s South Asia representative, Nava Thakuria, highlighted Mukesh's contributions to investigative journalism, particularly his coverage of misappropriated government funds and his stand against the activities of ultra-left insurgents in the Bastar district.

The global toll of journalist fatalities reached 179 in 2024, spanning 25 countries. India reported four journalist killings last year, all from central India, a region fraught with challenges for the press. Uttar Pradesh recorded the deaths of two journalists, Ashutosh Srivastava and Dilip Saini, while Bihar and Madhya Pradesh lost Shivshankar Jha and Salman Ali Khan, respectively.

Mukesh’s untimely death has once again spotlighted the perils faced by journalists in conflict zones and the urgent need for stronger protections for media professionals in India.

Gogoi's mortal remains consign to flames

Guwahati: The mortal remains of Tarun Gogoi consigned to the flames on Thursday three days after the former Chief Minister died of post COV19 complications at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital. JP Nadda suspends Guwahati visit

Guwahati: BJP president JP Nadda has deferred his two days visit to Guwahati ion Thursday and Friday in view of the demise of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi . According to state party leaders, Nadda will let the state BJP leadership know his rescheduled date very soon. Accompanied by central party observer Baijayant Jai Panda, JP Nadda was scheduled to arrive in Guwahati on Thursday to hold at least 14 party meeting ahead of 2021 assembly polls. Guwahati: Top Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called Tarun Gogoi a political mentor as he paid his last respect to the former Chief Minister who passed away on Monday. Taking to media, Gandhi heaped praised on Gogoi saying that Gogoi could inject new hopes and aspirations for Assam and it's people who was least bothered about his personal life. Rahul Gandhi pays homage to Tarun Gogoi

Guwahati: Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi paid his tribute to Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday two days after the former Chief Minister breathed his last at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital. Gandhi, who arrived in the capital city from Goa at 9 in the morning straightly left for Gogoi's official residence in Dispur where he condoled the demise of the senior Congress leader. Accompanied by KC Venugopal and Jitendra Singh, Gandhi rushed to the Shankardev Kalakhetra where paid his last respect to Gogoi.  His mortal remains would be kept at the Shankardev Kalakhetra for Wednesday and would be cremated at Navagraga cremation ground on Thursday.

Guwahati: Veteran Congress leader and former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is dead. He passed away in the evening at Guwahati Medical College Hospital where he was undergoing treatment of post COVID complications. His condition deteriorated on Saturday as his organs did not properly respond to the line of treatment.

Congress files complaint against Himanta

Guwahati: State  Congress has filed a formal complaint against senior minister Himanta Biswa Sarma accusing him of trying to ignite communal clash by using a controversial video clip in social media.  A delegation of the party lodged the complaint at the Bhangagarh police station demanding action against Sarma as.
