Street play against atrocities on women
In order to create awareness among the public about the increasing incidents of atrocities on women, “Sanmilita Nari Adhikar Suraksha Mancha” has started a two month long mass awareness programme in some districts of upper Assam. In association with “Vox-Pouli”, a local NGO, they staged a street play titled “Dharitrir Uchoponi” at Golaghat town on 19th December. In India a women is raped in every 26 minutes; a case of dowry death occurred in every 102 minutes etc. Talking to Assam Times, Vox-Populi’s President Partha J. Bora said that even after implementation of Domestic Violence Act and other stringent provisions in Indian Penal Code for violence against women, the incidents of atrocities against women have not come down. He further added that people would react positively to this type of awareness programme.

A self styled Sergeant Major of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) was arrested from Borjan Lakhibari area of Golaghat District on the night of 4th July.
