CPI Demands Immediate Halt to Evictions, Blasts Govt on Land, Drought, and ULFA Policy

The Communist Party of India (CPI) has strongly condemned the ongoing eviction drives in Assam, calling them "inhumane and arbitrary", and demanded their immediate halt. Speaking at a press conference in Nazira, CPI State Secretary Kanak Gogoi lashed out at the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government, accusing it of violating Supreme Court guidelines and failing to provide adequate rehabilitation to displaced families.

“Eviction without rehabilitation is inhumane”

Gogoi asserted that eviction operations are being carried out without due process and reflect the government's pro-corporate agenda. “Offering 1.5 kathas of land and ₹50,000 is a smokescreen. The real aim is to transfer land to corporate giants like Adani, Ambani, and Ramdev,” he claimed.

He emphasized that the land rights of indigenous people must be protected and urged the government to regularize encroached lands held by indigenous farmers through proper land laws and issuance of pattas. “If ministers like Ashok Singhal, Jayantamala Baruah, and Atul Bora can acquire land in family names, why are ordinary indigenous people being denied the same rights?” Gogoi questioned.

Calls for Opposition Unity

Gogoi called upon all opposition parties to unite against the BJP-led government, warning that no single party can defeat the BJP alliance alone. He urged opposition leaders to move beyond election-centric politics and build a people’s movement on the streets to challenge “the BJP’s divisive and anti-democratic agenda.”

He emphasized the need for a credible policy alternative rooted in secularism, equity, and federalism to win public trust.

ULFA, ST Status & State Autonomy

The CPI leader also criticized the government for launching military operations against ULFA (Independent) camps in Myanmar, stating it undermines the peace process. “The ULFA issue is a political problem, not a law-and-order one. The root causes must be addressed through dialogue,” he said.

To preserve the greater Assamese national identity, Gogoi reiterated CPI’s demand for:

  • ST status for six indigenous communities.

  • Special state status for Assam under Articles 370 and 371(A).

  • Support from existing ST communities to ensure that no outsider can claim land ownership in Assam.

Government Failure on Drought and Corruption

CPI also accused the government of failing to respond effectively to the drought-like situation across several districts. Gogoi demanded the implementation of a statewide irrigation policy to facilitate multiple cropping cycles and ensure agricultural resilience.

Additionally, the CPI called for a high-level probe into the alleged cattle smuggling and cow sale scam at Goru Khuti’s agricultural farm, demanding accountability and punishment for those involved.

Leopard trapped in Geleky

Forest officials in Sivasagar district captured a leopard which has been creating a reign of terror at a tea garden area in Geleky. Acting on the complaints of the local residents in the Modi Tea Estate area, the forest officials with the help of a group of people laid a trap where the animal landed on Friday night. Then it was sent to a safe place to be rehabilitated much to a major respite for hundreds of people in the entire area who has already lost their domestic animals like cows, goats and pigs.

Nazira freedom fighter passes away

Freedom fighter, president of Nazira District Freedom Fighters Association and veteran Congress leader Subha Gogoi breathed his last at his residence at Mazenga on Thursday. He was 95 and survived by his wife and three sons. MLA of Nazira Debobrate Saikia, ex. Minister Hemoprobha Saikia, ex. MP Durpad Borgohain and several organisations condoled in his death.

Nazira Press Club to hold Silver Jubilee

Established in 1992, the Nazira press club, which is the common plateform of all media persons of Nazira Sub-Division  will celiberate its Silver Jubilee with a day long programme on July 29. Don’t auction oilfields: AASU to govt

The protest over the oilfield auctioning move gathers momentum when AASU activists in large number staged mass demonstration in Nazira on Wednesday asking the government not to proceed. Day of protest in Sivasagar

The protest over the move to auction oilfields and VAT hike have refused to die down. Many activists of the Ahom Jatiya Gana Manch in Sivasagar staged a two hours dharna in protest against the tow decisions alleging that the new government keeps taking anti people policies. All out against price hike

Nazira AASU unit staged its dharna on Friday against the spiralling price rise following the hike in VAT against 127 goods. Hundreds of student activists thronged Nazira town in the morning where they staged dharna for four hours raising slogans against the government.Talking to Assam Times, the protesters said that the new government would have to face the consequences if its keeps the anti-people policies. “The VAT hike was unwanted. Howls of protest in Sivasagar

Several parties and organizations staged protests in Sivasagar district on Monday raising a number of issues confronting Assam and its people. Hundreds of activists of the Peoples Council of Peace and Development staged a 4 hour long dharna in front of the DC office demanding an immediate rollback of the move to auction 12 oilfields. Other demands include measures to stop rhino poaching in Kaziranga. Later, they sent a memorandum to the Centre through the Deputy Commissioner outlining their demands. Meanwhile, CPI unit in district also submitted a memorandum before the DC to stall the process to auction the oilfields.

Bandh call hits Nazira

The 12 hour bandh call in protest against the move to auction 12 oil fields heavily hit normal life in Nazira on Tuesday. Called by the Tai Ahom Youva Parishad, the bandh got total response in the entire Nazira sub division where schools and colleges, banks and other public and private institutions remained closed. Many picketers enforced the bandh by burning tyres on the roads apart from shouting slogans against the central and state governments.
