CPI Leader Kanak Gogoi Slams BJP-Led Alliance, Backs Opposition in Assam Polls

Nazira, April 3: Senior CPI leader Kanak Gogoi on Friday launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led alliance, alleging that “communal politics has eroded the value-based political culture of Assam,” and expressed confidence that the ruling coalition will be voted out in the upcoming Assembly elections.

Addressing a press conference in Nazira, Gogoi, who is also the CPI’s candidate for the Nazira legislative constituency in the forthcoming 2026 Assam Assembly elections, said the BJP-led government has weakened Assam’s long-standing tradition of communal harmony and socialism. He accused the ruling alliance of promoting divisive “Hindu-Muslim-Miya politics,” which he claimed has misled the people of the state.

Calling upon voters to support the opposition alliance under the leadership of Gaurav Gogoi, Gogoi urged the public to vote for the restoration of peace, unity, and a just society in Assam. He further alleged that while a few families have witnessed massive economic growth in recent years, the lower middle class, farmers, labourers, and the poor have been deprived of their basic rights.

Highlighting rising inflation, Gogoi pointed to the increasing prices of essential commodities, petrol, diesel, and cooking gas, which he said have placed a heavy burden on ordinary citizens. He also raised concerns over corruption and called for effective measures to control price rise and ensure fair political solutions to pressing issues.

The CPI leader emphasized the need to safeguard constitutional rights of citizens, including linguistic and religious minorities, women, and marginalized communities. He stressed protecting indigenous land rights, ensuring access to education, employment, and livelihood opportunities, and strengthening democratic and secular values in the state.

Outlining key promises from the CPI’s election manifesto, Gogoi mentioned modernization of agriculture, tackling unemployment, increasing daily wages of tea garden workers to ₹351, improving wages for unorganized workers, granting special state status to Assam, resolving inter-state border disputes, and addressing flood and erosion problems. He also advocated free healthcare and education, along with promoting small-scale industries to generate employment.

Referring to the Nazira constituency, Gogoi predicted a triangular contest and expressed confidence that the CPI candidate would emerge victorious with a narrow margin. He also criticized sitting MLA Debabrata Saikia, claiming that voters have lost faith in his leadership after 15 years in office.

Gogoi concluded by asserting that an opposition-led government would be formed in Assam under Gaurav Gogoi’s leadership, with the CPI playing a significant role in the new dispensation.
