Guwahati: Renowned Assamese dramatist Dr. Arun Sarma, recipient of both the Sahitya Akademi and Sangeet Natak Akademi awards, is widely regarded as a pioneer of Assamese Absurd Theatre. He played a major role in shaping modern Assamese dramatic literature by introducing avant-garde European theatrical forms, including expressionism, to regional audiences.
One of his most discussed plays, Anupam Andhar (Dark is Beautiful), first published in 2013, is considered among the final major full-length dramatic works of his illustrious literary career. The play continues to hold significance in contemporary Assamese theatre for its exploration of existential themes, human relationships, and social complexities.
Paying tribute to the legendary playwright, the Guwahati Sishu Natya Vidyalaya (GSNV) will stage Anupam Andhar on May 23 and 24 at the Surjya Club Auditorium in Guwahati.
The production has been conceptualised and directed by Manik Roy, a prominent theatre personality and founder of GSNV. The play will feature emerging actors Mriganga and Atrayee in leading roles.
Known for departing from conventional commercial theatre, Dr. Sarma’s dramatic style delves into deeper philosophical and social concerns. Since his passing, several children’s and youth theatre groups across Northeast India have continued staging Anupam Andhar to honour his literary and theatrical legacy.
Among these, the productions by the Guwahati Sishu Natya Vidyalaya under the guidance of Manik Roy have earned special appreciation for keeping alive the playwright’s unique theatrical vision.
