In a significant initiative to preserve and promote Assam's rich manuscript heritage, the Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva, in collaboration with the International Council on Monuments and Sites, India, North-East Zone (ICOMOS), is organizing a special Internship Program on 'Manuscript and Manuscriptology' beginning July 1, 2026.
The two-week residential training program, designed in alignment with the New Education Policy, is open to college and university students of all disciplines, including Arts, History, Archaeology and Museum Science.
Participants will receive hands-on training in traditional Sanchipat preparation, use of natural pigments such as hengul and haital, traditional manuscript painting, documentation, conservation and basic digitization of manuscripts. The program aims to groom future heritage conservators by connecting younger generations with the near-extinct Sankari painting tradition, an invaluable treasure of world heritage.
Prominent manuscript painter and heritage conservator Mridu Moucham Bora will serve as the chief resource person, alongside several other specialists in the field.
Successful trainees will be awarded joint certificates from the Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva and ICOMOS. The Society has already trained around 2,000 artists across Assam under similar initiatives, work that received patronage from the Government of India under the Make in India scheme.
Interested students and institutions may contact the General Secretary of the Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva at 9401383517.
