Guwahati : The All Assam Students Union( AASU) and the All Minority Students Union(AMSU) are exchanged in a bitter war of words.
In a press conference at Guwahati on Saturday, The AMSU Organising Secretary Ajijul Hussain Khondakar, chief organizing secretary of AAMSU had criticised the AASU Adviser, Sammujal Bhattacharya as a Congress stooge and also warned of a backlash against the Asomiya community in the minority dominated districts of Dhubri and Goalpara.
AASU central leaders as well as the Anchalik Units have come down strongly against these statements and they have issued strong warning to the AAMSU to abstain from such dangerous statements.
AGP and BJP have strongly criticised the AMSU statements. BJP wants the government to initiate criminal proceedings against the AMSU leaders. AGP President Brindaban Goswami in a statement wondered why the CM has not uttered a single word on the inflammatory statements made by the AMSU.
Various Organisations in the State have also come out strongly against the AMSU for their statements.
Meanwhile the AMSU in a damage control exercise has said that they had not said that they would drive out the Majority Population from the minority dominated areas but rather they were apprehensive that due to the recent steps taken by AASU and NESO, the minorities may feel aggrieved and they may retaliate.

Once again the Gauhati university campus buys a bad name. An uneasy situation is prevailing in the varsity camp when a boy committed suicide on Wednesday evening. According to information, identified as Debojit Talukdar the youth committed suicide beside a girls hostel. His body was found hanging in the evening. The reason has yet to be ascertained. Police have already registered a case in this connection.

Media Archives-cum-National Reference Library on the North East (Media Trust, Assam) has organized a five-day ‘Workshop-cum-Intensive Training on Preservation of Rare and Old Documents’ in the city. The workshop to be held on the premises of Media Trust, Assam at Rupnagar will start from March 24.

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday tabled state budget for 2010-11 announcing a slew of measures to the voters a year ahead of the assembly polls. The budget has a huge Rs3464.46 crore deficit figure but is teeming with populist measures. Gogoi, who also holds the finance portfolio said the state's rate of growth touches 6 per cent. According to sources, to be tabled by Gogoi, who hold the finance portfolio, the budget has no fresh proposal for tax and there is no harsh measure in it in view of the next assembly polls.
