Minal Hazarika wife of Sanjoy Hazarika, noted author, Journalist and Managing Trustee of Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research (C-NES), passed away on at the Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi on April 3, 2009. She had suffered a stroke at Guwahati on 15 January 2009 and was undergoing treatment at Gangaram Hospital for nearly three months. She was in her fifties and was a well known figure in Assam and in New Delhi. She leaves behind a daughter (Meghna Hazarika) besides her husband. At this hour of grief we pray for the departed soul.

I never knew Mrs. Hazarika personally but I had a telecon with Mr. Hazarika and from what I have read of him and his films I have seen, at this moment my condolences and prayers are with him and his family.

I knew Sanjoy from our St. Edmund's school days in Shillong. Mrs Hazarika's work through C-NES has been an eyeopener for Indians vis-a-vis the North East. This loss is a great setback to propagation of the understanding of the psyche of northeasterners. May her soul rest in peace and may Sanjoy and Meghna have God's blessings to overcome this bereavement.

Forest cover in Northeast is declining compared to 2009 assesment, according to the India State of Forest Report released today by Environment Ministry. Assam Government has requested the Central Government to revive the Brahmaputra Board to prevent floods and erosion. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi today met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Railway minister Dinesh Prasad Trivedi and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi in this regard. Gogoi met Prime Minister for 20 minutes at the North Block office on Tuesday and asked him for additional funds for the State. "There are several plans. EMFA condemns attack on photo-journalist

Electronic Media Forum Assam (EMFA) has condemned the unprovoked attack by a section of students of Cotton College on some journalists on duty today (Monday) in Panbazar locality. The EMFA urges the authorities (both the Cotton College and Assam Police) to take legal actions against those guilty students at the earliest. Mentionable that photo journalist Anupam Nath, who represents Associated Press, had some arguments with two Cottonians at noon as he was riding his vehicle in front of RKB Hostel of Cotton College. 3 killed in cylinder explosion

Three persons of a family were burnt to death following a gas cylinder explosion in Sonitpur district on Sunday. The gas cylinder exploded on Sunday afternoon at Darwanpatty area in Tezpur town killing a woman, a 15-month-old girl child and a youth while the owner of the house, Ashutosh Ghosh, was severely burnt. Ghosh's wife Archana Ghosh, daughter and another relative Bapon Ghosh died in the fire while he was admitted to Kanaklata Civil Hospital. Moreover, 6houses were gutted in the fire.

Husband beheads wife in court premises

A husband killed his wife before surrendering at a sub divisional magistrate’s court on Saturday.The incident took place in Hojai at around 12 noon when Bhuban Das beheaded his wife Phulmoti Das with a sharp dao inside a tea stall in the court premises. He later surrendered before the court. Both Bhuban and Phulmoti came to the court a few days after Phulmoti registered a case against her husband.

8 killed in Nagaon road mishap

Altogether eight people were killed and several others have been injured at a tragic a road mishap in Nagaon district on Saturday. The mishap took place when a Tata magic carrying a group of youth Congress activist lost control when the vehicle arrived in Chakarigaon in the district at around 12 noon. Five died on the spot while three succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital. The injured activists have been rushed to the hospital.

Saras seized from Luhit Exp

Central excise department seized a huge amount of Saras from the Luhit Express in Guwahati on Saturday. The narcotic materials worth Rs 25 lakh were brought to Guwahati from an undisclosed place for sale. Nobody has so far been arrested.

International Film Fest in Guwahati from Sunday

Stages are set to hoist the Guwahati International Film Festival from Sunday in Guwahati. The event is set to end on February 11. It is expected to provide movie lovers an opportunity to watch critically-acclaimed films from across the globe. Organizers in Guwahati said that the films from France, Italy, Switzerland, Poland, Canada, Norway, Germany, South Africa, Taiwan, Turkey and Iran would be screened in the festival being organized in association with the Assam State Film (Finance and Development) Corporation. The screening would take place at Rabindra Bhawan, Gauhati University, IIT-Guwahati.
