Sanjoy Hazarika Bereaved

Minal Hazarika wife of Sanjoy Hazarika, noted author, Journalist and Managing Trustee of Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research (C-NES), passed away on at the Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi on April 3, 2009. She had suffered a stroke at Guwahati on 15 January 2009 and was undergoing treatment at Gangaram Hospital for nearly three months. She was in her fifties and was a well known figure in Assam and in New Delhi. She leaves behind a daughter (Meghna Hazarika) besides her husband. At this hour of grief we pray for the departed soul.

I never knew Mrs. Hazarika personally but I had a telecon with Mr. Hazarika and from what I have read of him and his films I have seen, at this moment my condolences and prayers are with him and his family.

I knew Sanjoy from our St. Edmund's school days in Shillong. Mrs Hazarika's work through C-NES has been an eyeopener for Indians vis-a-vis the North East. This loss is a great setback to propagation of the understanding of the psyche of northeasterners. May her soul rest in peace and may Sanjoy and Meghna have God's blessings to overcome this bereavement.

It was the fourth leopard attack in Guwahati this month.

Junior football team declared

The members of the Junior football team to take part in the National tournament to be held at Kalyani of West Bengal from January 31 to February 4, declared. The team members are, Mijing Narzary, Chandan Neog ( Goal keeper), Fiden Swargiari, Pintu Kolita, Manakh Pratim Gogoi, Soni Basfor, Pinku Mohon, Pallab Jyoti Moran, Chironjib Gogoi, Dhonsreng Musahari, Progyan Sundar Gogoi, Borindo Boro, Boby Martin Lahon, Pritom Saikia, Dharmeswar Dewri, Tiku Baglari, Biki Majhi, Luise Bhaskor Bora, Biplob Gogoi, Nijun Mushahari, Lakhya Jyoti Boro, Pranjol Pratim Moran. Duliajan ready to welcome Dr APJ Abdul Kalam

Bina Rajkhowa, jailor of Tezpur Central Jail is honoured with President's award. Rajkhowa was transferred to Tezpur on 21 March, 2011 from Barpeta woman jail. She has already dedicated her service in many jails of Assam.

Bomb recovered in Sonari

Utter sensation prevails in Sonari after security forces recovered a crude bomb on Thursday morning. The bomb was kept inside a bag and was planted in Dihgalipukhuri which was spotted by the security forces. The bomb was recovered just before the unfurling of the national tricolor in the morning. Later it was defused. But the local residents are preferring to keep themselves confined to their homes.

Militant diktat defied; R-Day celebrated

Braving a boycott call by 12 militant outfits, Assam joined the nation in the celebration of the 63rd Republic Day on Thursday. Thousands of people attended the central function at the Khanapara Veterinary playground in the morning where Governor J B Patnaik unfurled the national flag and inspected the guard of honour. This was followed by a colourful cultural function. Similarly, cabinet minister hoisted the national flag and inspected the guard of honour of the armed forces and NCC in all district headquarters in the morning amid tight security.
