Sanjoy Hazarika Bereaved

Minal Hazarika wife of Sanjoy Hazarika, noted author, Journalist and Managing Trustee of Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research (C-NES), passed away on at the Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi on April 3, 2009. She had suffered a stroke at Guwahati on 15 January 2009 and was undergoing treatment at Gangaram Hospital for nearly three months. She was in her fifties and was a well known figure in Assam and in New Delhi. She leaves behind a daughter (Meghna Hazarika) besides her husband. At this hour of grief we pray for the departed soul.

I never knew Mrs. Hazarika personally but I had a telecon with Mr. Hazarika and from what I have read of him and his films I have seen, at this moment my condolences and prayers are with him and his family.

I knew Sanjoy from our St. Edmund's school days in Shillong. Mrs Hazarika's work through C-NES has been an eyeopener for Indians vis-a-vis the North East. This loss is a great setback to propagation of the understanding of the psyche of northeasterners. May her soul rest in peace and may Sanjoy and Meghna have God's blessings to overcome this bereavement.

Army apprehend Garib Rath blast suspect

Security forces on Saturday arrested an NDFB cadre suspected to have been involved in the July 8 blast which caused the derailing of the Kolkata-bound Garib Rath Express was arrested in Assam’s Chirang district. Sources say patrolling troops of the 15 Dogra Regiment acting on a tip off apprehended the militant identified as Edward Shrampani. Suspected NDFB militants planted the powerful bomb on the railway tracks at Gossaigaon, killing a child and injuring 13 other passengers of the Garib Rath Express.

Akhil drops bombshell against Himanta

Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma seems to have landed in trouble when RTI activist Akhil Gogoi comes out with evidence to prove the ministers involvement in a number of criminal cases against him. NDFB rebel died in Sonitpur encounter

A hardcore NDFB rebel died at an encounter with security forces in Sonitpur district of Assam on Saturday. According to information, the encounter took place at around 11 in the morning at Hijuguri under Rongapara police station bordering Arunachal Pradesh. Three other cadres of the Bodo rebel outfit managed to escape during the encounter. The deceased is yet to be identified. Police later recovered an AK-56 rifle along with several rounds of bullets from the spot.

Hardcore ULFA leader arrested

Dispur police claimed to have arrested a hardcore ULFA leader on Thursday. The ULFA militant has been identified as Bijoi Deka (24), son of Naren Deka, a resident of South Gandhibari under Tamulpur police station in Baska district. He was apprehended by Dispur police and 128 bn of CRPF.

The Opposition parties have alleged that the government is trying to gag the Opposition parties before the commnecement of the monsoon session of Assembly. NDFB targets trains

A minor boy died and several others have been injured as tripple blast rocked a train near Gosaigaon in kokrajhar. The first one blast took placed at 2.20 midnight at the Garib rath whe a six yr child died. The driver is missing. Some critically injured passengers have been rushed to hospital. Akhil ups ante on Himanta

Assam RTI activist Akhil Gogoi seems to have shaken Dispur trading charges after charges against health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. In a sensational revelation, Gogoi told reporters that the minister last year purchased two luxurious cars worth Rs 40 lakh within a period of 2 months for his 5-year old daughter. Gogoi said the source of the fund is doubtful. Reopen Manobendra case, Mahanta to Gogoi

The war of words between Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and AGP leader Prafulla Kumar Mahanta touched a new low. Continuing his war statement, the former chief minister dared his successor to reopen the sensational Manabendra Sarma killing case if the LOC case can be reopened. Guwahati medical student rescued in Siliguri

A medical student who remained traceless from Guwahati for around 24 hours has been rescued in Siliguri on Wednesday morning. According to information, Kaushik Kotoky, the son of B Barooah Cancer Institute director Dr Amal Kotoky managed to have escaped from the miscreants Siliguri 24 hours after he was kidnapped from his resident in Guwahati. According to information, he went missing after two workers came to his residence on Tuesday. Details are awaited.
