Media must be brave and selfless

Media and books should (must) play a vital role in guiding the society for sustained growth and intellectual upliftment. Both the mediums should also continue engaging the common people for a better future addressing their hope and aspiration, argued DN Chakrabarty, a senior journalist of Assam during a discussion held in Tihu of Nalbari district.


Addressing a public meeting in the premises of Tihu College on July 23, Chakrabarty also appealed to the conscious citizens to come out with the commitment and dedication for their respective roles. The former editor of ‘Dainik Asom’ also cautioned the media persons ‘not to be vulnerable’ to the motivated and powerful elements in the society, which might finally ruin the medium.


The meeting, organized by Tihu Anchalik Sangbadik Santha, which was established in 1988 and now affiliated by All Assam Journalists’ Union, was also addressed by another journalist Nava Thakuria. Talking about the changing faces of media, Thakuria urged the reporters to take the advantage of the new technology for the professional upliftment.


Presided over by Prankrishna Das, a senior journalist, the discussion on the role of media and the books on social upliftment, witnessed varied discourses on the media and the literature.


Inaugurated by Rohini Medhi and supported by Mohan Chandra Kalita of Binapani Book Stall, the meeting was also addressed and attended by Karuna Kanta Kalita, Karuna Kanta Das, Chandana Devi, Balin Saikia, Biman Kalita, Ajit Sharma, Anjan Sharma, Gunajit Kalita, Sanjib Das, Dibakar Medhi, Pankaj Bejbarua, Bhaskar Kalita, Haren Thakuria, Shantanu Deka, Hemanga Goswami etc.


A chorus with the theme of media and the society, penned by Hemanta Talukder, where the local girls took part, was presented before the meeting. Local students were also awarded with prizes, who participated in the painting competition on the occasion. Earlier in the morning, the organizational flag was hoisted by Prankrishna Das and Swahid Tarpan was conducted by Girindra Nath Sharma, the principal of Tihu College. It followed by the plantation program, which was led by Chanakya Charan Kalita.

Massive fire in Guwahati

Properties worth several lakh have been reduced to ashes when a massive fire broke out in Guwahati on Monday. Initially, the fire broke out at a shop in Junali area which later spread to the adjacent shops. Five fire tenders have been rushed to the spot to douse the flames. The reason is yet to be ascertained but according to preliminary report the fire originated from the electric short circuit.

Explosives seized in Tinsukia

Security forces in Tinsukia district recovered a huge cache of explosives on Sunday. Acting on a tip off army and police raided a house in Laila Dhulijan where a huge cache of explosives were recovered. These include 3 bottle grenades and 12 detonetor sticks along 2 KG RDX, 2 Chinese grenades. The explosives were recovered after security forces arrested an ULFA militant in the area.

Woman kills husband in Nazira

In a bizarre incident that runs into a statewide shockwave, a woman allegedly hacked to death her husband during a quarrel over his persistent drinking habit in Sibsagar district on Sunday. The incident took place early on Sunday, when Lalita Chettri attacked her husband, who was in his early 40s, with an axe after the couple had an argument over the husband's drinking habit. Lalita's husband Prasad Chettri died on the spot. The woman was arrested.

Tea Tribes festival held at Nazira

Regional unit of the AATSA, Nazira organised Tea Tribes Festivel at Nazira Natiya Mandir on January 6. Biju Phukan hospitalized again

Renowned film personality Biju Phukan has been hospitalized again on Sunday. Phukan was rushed to the Namecare Hospital after he complained uneasiness in the afternoon. He left the hospital after month long treatment of stork last week. Sources said his condition is stable.

GNLA militant killed in Dudhnoi encounter

Armed with ULFA support, GNLA spreads its diabolic tentacles in the run up to the Republic Day. A hardcore GNLA militant was killed at an encounter with security forces in Goalpara district of Assam bordering Meghalaya on Saturday. The encounter took place in Dudhnoi where dreaded militant of the Garo outfit Aasela Sangma was killed in the morning. Goalpara superintendent of police Shymal Saikia claimed to have recovered an US made carbine, 2 magzines a radio set from the spot. The encounter took place hours after police arrested a GNLA militant from the area.

Rare global recognition for Sankardev

Its yet another record the state set on Sunday. Altogether 15000 artists played khol in Titabor to help Sankardev get global recognition.The event took place at Mezenga Pathar in Titabor where dressed in traditional Sankari attires, 15000 artistes played khols for 15 minutes.
