Felicitation to media fellows in press club

The winners of Birsingh Majhi Memorial and ERD Foundation fellowships were felicitated at a brief function held at the Guwahati Press Club on Thursday. Both the fellowships were being conducted by the press club.


The fellows were handed over the first part of their assured money in today’s function by Prithibi Majhi, who was present in the function with his wife Tarulata Kakati Majhi. Similarly representative of ERD foundation Rose Mahanta handed over the first part of the assured amount to Jishnu Medhi of NE Television, who will study various aspects of pavement dwellers (primarily beggars) of Guwahati under the fellowship sponsored by the ERD Foundation.


The first chain of fellowships, sponsored by Prithibi Majhi and his family, would cover a comprehensive study of tea industry with fish production and role of women journalists in Assam. The fellowship on the ‘Economy of Tea Plantations (of Assam)’ was awarded to Ranen Kumar Goswami, a Guwahati based senior journalist. Goswami will make a comprehensive study about the tea industry of Assam, for which he will be offered a financial support of Rs. 40,000/- (Rupees forty thousand only).


The next fellowship on the tea plantation workers addressing the administration, welfare and other socio-cultural issues related to them went to Prabal Kumar Das of The Assam Tribune. The four month long fellowship will provide him equal amount of money as that of the first one.


The fellowship on ‘Women in Assam based Media’ was offered to Sabita Lahkar, another Guwahati based freelance journalist. Her study will include the challenge of women in the media and some significant success stories of Assam, for which she will be given Rs. 20,000/- (Rupees twenty thousand only).


Another two month long fellowship on fish production (in Assam) was awarded to Arup Jyoti Mahanta of Dainik Agradoot. The fellowship, which covers a comprehensive study on Assam's potentiality in fish production and possibility of self dependence in future, will bring equal amount of money as of the third one.


Sponsored by ERD Foundation, Guwahati the fifth fellowship is expected to encourage the fellow for an in-depth study (and report) about the issue of pavement dwellers. The fellow will try to analyze the reason behind their homelessness, categorization and also the security aspect of the homeless persons in the city, for which he will be paid Rs 15,000 (fifteen thousand only).


The final outcome of all the fellowship programme will be compiled and published in a book form for the benefit of general readers. Before that the fellows will prepare a number of articles for publication in the newspaper on their respective study areas, stated in a release issued by the press club secretary Nava Thakuria.

Congratulations to the fellowship holders. Congratulations to Prithibi Majhi and ERD Foundation for coming up with such a novel idea of providing fellowships for such research work. And, most importantly, Congratulations for selecting worthy persons for the mentioned work....all the above media persons are pursuing 'Genuine' Journalism.

ULFA condemns Maoist killing in Tinsukia

The United Liberation Front of Asom on Thursday slammed police a day after four suspected Maoists were killed at an encounter with police in Tinsukia district. In an e-mail statement, ULFA commander in chief said that the outfit has support to the Maoists and that policemen deployed in the operations should try to learn the lesson of humanity. Gogoi in a mood to reshuffle cabinet

Assam Chief minister Tarun Gogoi is in a mood to reshuffle his council of ministers a year after his government retained power for the third consecutive term. Big blow for Maoists in Assam: RK Singh

The Centre on Wednesday claimed to have given a big blow to Maoists trying to set up bases in Assam. Hours after the encounter at Sadiya, Union home secretary RK Singh told reporters in Delhi that the encounter would certainly halt their operations and hamper their activities in a big way. Union Home Minister P Chidambaram recently said that Assam emerged as the new theatre of Maoist activity and there were also inputs about links of CPI (Maoist) with insurgent groups in Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.

Armed miscreants held in Guwahati Rly station

Security forces seized arms and ammunition from a person who claims to be a Nagaland Police constable at the railway station in Guwahati on Wednesday. Identified as Pradeep Kumar, GRP caught him when he was moving suspiciously and about to board the Delhi-bound Sampark Kranti Express arrival here by the Dimapur-Guwahati BG Express. Two pistols and 90 rounds of cartridges were recovered from his possession during search. Kumar claimed that he was a constable of the Nagaland Police. The veracity of his statement was being checked.

Ramakanta retained as Tiwa body CEM

Ramakanta Deori was retained as the chief executive member of the Tiwa Autonomous Council following a trial of strength on Wednesday. Deori got 19 votes while his rival Rina Pator secured only one vote. The trial of strength was ordered by Gauhati high court following a writ petition by Pator after a tussle for the post of CEM. The voting was conducted by Morigaon deputy commissioner Vishal Solanki.

Damaged powerlines to be repaired by next week

Power Grid Corporation on Wednesday said that damaged towers of transmission lines that carry electricity to the North East region would be restored by next week.Towers had collapsed at two locations near Alipurdwar in West Bengal on 400 kV Binnaguri-Bongaigaon circuits due to heavy storm and inclement weather conditions on May 3. Power Grid said it expects to "restore this line by May 14 on permanent basis.The NER grid continued to be connected with the ER grid by two numbers of 220 kV circuits between Birpara and Salakati. Power Grid is engaged in power transmission business with the mandate for planning, co-ordination, supervision and control over complete inter-state transmission system.

4 Maoists killed in Sadiya encounter

Four suspected Maoist activists died during an fierce encounter with security forces in Tinsukia district on Wednesday. The encounter took place in Sadiya. The deceased include a top commander Sanjeev Borah, who took the lead in setting up a Maoist base in Assam. The massive operation was undertaken following a tip-off about the presence of a group of Maoists at Deopani Borgora village under Sadiya police station. The security forces then launched an operation in the area and in the ensued encounter four Maoists were killed.Search operations are continuing in the area and huge quantities of arms including AK-47 rifles and hand grenades have been recovered from them. Encounter atop Umrangsu: 3 killed

Three miscreants were killed and another was arrested at the end of a fierce encounter with security forces atop Umrangsu in Jayantia Hills district of Meghalaya on Tuesday. The encounter took place during an operation launched to rescue a minor boy a day after he was kidnapped in the hills district. The gun battle took place a few hours after the minor boy’s father paid the miscreants a huge amount of Rs 50 lakh for safe release of his son. Police rescued the minor boy and arrested the main culprit.
