Felicitation to media fellows in press club

The winners of Birsingh Majhi Memorial and ERD Foundation fellowships were felicitated at a brief function held at the Guwahati Press Club on Thursday. Both the fellowships were being conducted by the press club.


The fellows were handed over the first part of their assured money in today’s function by Prithibi Majhi, who was present in the function with his wife Tarulata Kakati Majhi. Similarly representative of ERD foundation Rose Mahanta handed over the first part of the assured amount to Jishnu Medhi of NE Television, who will study various aspects of pavement dwellers (primarily beggars) of Guwahati under the fellowship sponsored by the ERD Foundation.


The first chain of fellowships, sponsored by Prithibi Majhi and his family, would cover a comprehensive study of tea industry with fish production and role of women journalists in Assam. The fellowship on the ‘Economy of Tea Plantations (of Assam)’ was awarded to Ranen Kumar Goswami, a Guwahati based senior journalist. Goswami will make a comprehensive study about the tea industry of Assam, for which he will be offered a financial support of Rs. 40,000/- (Rupees forty thousand only).


The next fellowship on the tea plantation workers addressing the administration, welfare and other socio-cultural issues related to them went to Prabal Kumar Das of The Assam Tribune. The four month long fellowship will provide him equal amount of money as that of the first one.


The fellowship on ‘Women in Assam based Media’ was offered to Sabita Lahkar, another Guwahati based freelance journalist. Her study will include the challenge of women in the media and some significant success stories of Assam, for which she will be given Rs. 20,000/- (Rupees twenty thousand only).


Another two month long fellowship on fish production (in Assam) was awarded to Arup Jyoti Mahanta of Dainik Agradoot. The fellowship, which covers a comprehensive study on Assam's potentiality in fish production and possibility of self dependence in future, will bring equal amount of money as of the third one.


Sponsored by ERD Foundation, Guwahati the fifth fellowship is expected to encourage the fellow for an in-depth study (and report) about the issue of pavement dwellers. The fellow will try to analyze the reason behind their homelessness, categorization and also the security aspect of the homeless persons in the city, for which he will be paid Rs 15,000 (fifteen thousand only).


The final outcome of all the fellowship programme will be compiled and published in a book form for the benefit of general readers. Before that the fellows will prepare a number of articles for publication in the newspaper on their respective study areas, stated in a release issued by the press club secretary Nava Thakuria.

Congratulations to the fellowship holders. Congratulations to Prithibi Majhi and ERD Foundation for coming up with such a novel idea of providing fellowships for such research work. And, most importantly, Congratulations for selecting worthy persons for the mentioned work....all the above media persons are pursuing 'Genuine' Journalism.

Congratulation, thanks to the press clubs for facilitating the process for promoting the social and developmental journalism, if any body is interested for media fellow on child right issues can make contacts with me on my mail.

ULFA talk: Ball in Dispur's court

The Centre on Wednesday smartly passed the buck on to the state government after the SJA delegation camping in Delhi met P Chidambaram in the evening. The Union home minister said the state government can only release the jailed ULFA leaders to help them take a formal decision. Hena Bora to attend GPC programme

Eminent social worker Hena Bora will attend the Guest of the Month programme of Guwahati Press Club on June 25. The programme will begin at 12 noon. Ms Bora, a leader of Assam Mahila Sangh, women's wing of the Communist Party of India, will talk about various issues to the media. Member-journalists are requested to participate in the programme.

SJA delegation waiting to meet Chidambaram

The 6-member delegation led by Dr Hiren Gohain is all set to meet union home minister P Chidambaram along with some leading politicians. According to information, Dr Gohain and his delegation will meet Chidambaram to urge him to expediate the talk. The suggestion to release the jailed Ulfa top guns is likely to come up. During their date with Dr Singh on Monday, they were suggested to take it up with Chidambaram. Apart from the delegation is waiting to meet UPA chief Sonia Gandhi, BJP leader Sushma Swaraj seeking their support. On Tuesday they meet Left veteran AB Bardhan.

Positive signal from Sonia: Dr Gohain

A delegation of Sanmilita Jatiya Abhibartan led by Dr Hiren Gohain on Wednesday received positive signal in terms of holding talk with ULFA through dialogue. The Congress president flashed her green signal as the delegation met her at her 10th Janapath residence. Talking to reporters, the delegation leader and critic Dr Gohain said Gandhi was positive for an amicable settlement of the insurgency problem in Assam. The delegation is scheduled to meet Union home minister P Chidambaram at 4-30 in the evening.

CBI fails to get RH Khan in custody

The Central Bureau of Investigation probing the multicrore scam in the NC Hills of Tuesday failed to get remand of the accused RH Khan as he was not produced before the special court. According to information, the authorities at the Guwahati central jail did not take the suspended social welfare officer to the court citing health ground certified by a panel of doctors. The court has asked teh jail authorities to produce Khan before the court on June 28.

PM hints at positive response for talk: Dr Gohain

There seems to be an end to the decade-old deadlock over the ULFA-government talk. The encouraging development surfaces as prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh shows keen desire to hold talk with ULFA when a delegation of the statr's civil society called on him on Monday evening. Led by noted critic and educationist Dr Hiren Gohain, the Sanmilito Jatiyo Abhibartan delegation urged Dr Singh to revive the talk to end the decade old insurgency problems confronting Assam and its people. Talking to reporters after the date with Dr Singh , Dr Gohain, the chief convener of the convention said they are happy with the PM's positive response. Paresh not bigger than ULFA central body

Noted academician and critic Dr Hiren Gohain said ULFA C-in-C Paresh Barua can't alone oppose talk with Government. Talking to reporters in Delhi on Monday Dr Gohain said Barua has no right to impose a decision on talk and that it for central body to take the final decision where he is a member. 

SJA delegation happy with PM

PM's date with Dr Hiren Gohain led SJA delegation ended on a positive note on Monday. According to Dr Gohain, the prime minister is very positive and that he was keen to solve the Ulfa problem. He said the government must release the Jailed leaders to help them take a formal decision.
