Independence Day in Kuwait

Inquisitiveness, curiosity n proudness filled me as I got ready to attend the 62nd Independence Day at Indian Embassy,Kuwait. As we drove to the Embassy at 6.30am to reach and be part of the flag hoisting at 7.10am ,my mind was filled with different thoughts…thoughts of the many Indenpence Day we celebrated in our motherland Assam under the shadow of Assam Bandh . My one year daughter too wake up early that day as if she understood the importance of this special day. As we approach’d the embassy my husband park’d our car atleast 1km from the embassy as there was no space as hundreds of cars were already parked. As we came near the embassy we were pleasantly surprised to see hundreds of Indians from different walks of life and some like me with infants. People had Indian Flags in their hands. I felt so happy and proud when my infant daughter too took a flag and was waving. Jai Hind, Jai Bharat, Mera Bharat Mahan echoed in the air. The “Borah Drummers”, the members are Guajarati Muslims exhibited their talent and skills. Small school children and Doctors community sang patriotic songs. The Indian Ambassador Ajai Malhotra hosted the national tri-colour flag as we all stood there with proudness. He read out the Prime Minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh’s message ,the speech which he gave to millions of Indians from the Red Fort .He also read out the various facilities and schemes that the embassy has taken for thousands of Indian workers. After the cultural programme was over ,the Ambassador met the common people and listen to their grievances if any. Deep feeling of proudness enveloped thousands who gathered there to be part of such a celebration. Mughal Mahal, a famous Indian restaurant gave free breakfast (paratha,chola,sweets) to thousands of people who gathered . Free supplements on Independence Day were distributed by The Times(Kuwait’s premier weekly newspaper) and Arab Times(Kuwait’s national daily).


In a foreign country that too in a Middle East Muslim country like Kuwait we celebrated it so much fun, proudness and most importantly without fear, then why not in our motherland Assam??Can’t we be like rest of India and foreign countries in observing our Independence Day???When will such a day come???These thoughts filled my mind as we drove back home.


I remembered Jawaharlal Nehru’s Independence Day speech…. "Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we will redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.... We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again."


Its time for us, all assamese people to defy the Bandh and celebrate it with love, fun and frolic.

The Ambassador infact read out the President of India's message and not the Prime Minister's. Anyhow thanks to Parimita for sharing her thoughts. We too feel proud like her to be part of the celebrations of our great nation.

Pom-ba, it was a great coverage for us to know about how NRIs feel about their country and Independence. We Indians are actually, patriotic by birth; it is in our subconscious to feel great and own about our country. No matter where we live in heart we are always INDIANS, and the whole world today recognizes that.We must always endeavor to do better than before wherever we are, and mere that doing only will take our nation even higher and greater. AGP surrenders before BJP: Himanta

Assam Congress leader and health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma says the main Opposition AGP virtually surrendered before BJP when both the parties struck seat sharing deal in Delhi. AGP holds steering body meet to clear candidates

The Opposition Asom Gana Parishad is holding its crucial steering committee meeting on Saturday to finetune the list of the candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. According to information, the leaders will finalise the candidates for 3 seats while three others have been finalised earlier.Besides, the meeting is expected to discuss the pre poll alliance with BJP where they handed over 8 prestigious seats to the BJP. The party is expected to announce the list of the candidates on Sunday.

Assam House clears Rs 1,85,056 crore interim budget

The Assam Assembly has cleared a Rs 1,85,056 crore interim budget for April to July 2009 after it was tabled in the House by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi who is holding the finance portfolio on Satrurday. Gogoi presented the Vote-on-Accounts in the brief one-day budget session as the government could not lay the full budget for 2009-10 with the Model Code of Conduct for the Lok Sabha elections slated from April 16. In the one day session, the House further passed the Appropriation Bill relating to the interim budget by voice vote.Gogoi said his government was giving wide publicity in the newspapers of the schemes to make the people aware of these. We are not hankering after Indian citizenship: ULFA

The United Liberation Front of Asom says Indian citizenship has nothing to do those struggling for an independent Assam.In its mouthpiece Freedom, the banned insurgent outfit has made it plain that they left Indian citizenship right from the day they floated the outfit aiming at an independent Assam to make an end to the colonial rule with an era of exploitation. The clarification has come up a week after Assam Public Works, an NGO demanded cancellation of Indian citizenship for ULFA chief Paresh Baruah if he fails to come forward for talks before the upcoming Rongali Bihu.

Third Front meets in Guwahati to strike poll deal

The Asom United Democratic Front, NCP, CPI, CPM leaders are holding a crucial meeting in the city of Guwahati on Saturday to finalise the seat sharing deal for the upcoming Lok Sabha poll in Assam slated for April 16 and 23. The third front constituents earlier this month decided to strike the deal seeking a non Congress and non BJP government. Notably, the move for a third front came up as AGP started its confabulations with BJP. Several rounds of talks held earlier failed to hammer out a set of clear cut strategies but these parties have finalised thier seats and candidates.

4 killed in DHD(J) attacks in NC hills

Altogether four persons were killed as suspected DHD(J) militants shot dead the parents of two of thier former colleagues in North Cachar hills district on Friday morning.According to information, a few miscreants entered into the house of Men Dimasa at Tidik under Maibong police station bordering Arunachal Pradesh border. He was their former colleague who left the outfit a few months back. AGP denies joining NDA

Hours after BJP called Asom Gana Parishad an NDA partner, the regional party has made it plain that the deal is confined to seat sharing only. Fellowship to study on ‘Pavement Dwellers of Guwahati’

Guwahati Press Club with the support from ERD Foundation, Guwahati has declared a short term fellowship programme to study various aspects of pavement dwellers (primarily beggars) of the city. The one and half month long fellowship is expected to provide space for the journalist to go for an in-depth study (and report) about the issue. The fellow will try to analyze the reason behind their homelessness, categorization and also the security aspect of the homeless persons in Guwahati.The selected fellow will be offered Rs 15,000 as remuneration. ULFA reblel killed in Hajo

A suspected ILFA cadre and a civilian died in two separate incidents of firing at the Bhoiratoli village under Hajo police station on Wednesday night.According to information, two suspected ULFA militants shot dead a farmer at around 8 in the evening forcing police and army to launch a masive manhunt. Police and army personnel raided the village and it resulted in an encounter where the suspected ULFA rebel died. A nine M M pistol has been recovered from him. The manhunt for the second culprit is on.
