The Assamese community of Toronto represented Assam in India’s 60th Independence day parade held in downtown Toronto on 19 Aug 07. The celebration of India @ 60 took place on Sunday 19 Aug 07 attended by the Indian community of Toronto, Consul general of India and other dignitaries from Ontario and Canadian Governments. It started with a 2 km long procession followed by a cultural program. Every state represented with their traditional attires. Both adults and children of Assamese community of Toronto took part in the parade with tradition silk (Muga and Pat) dress and Gamosha.

The participants of Assamese community were proud to represent Assam in such an event wearing Assamese traditional attire. Both children and adults also enjoyed the event and felt proud to be Assamese in heart in a far away place from Assam.

IED found near polling booth

A major incident of blast was averted on Thursday when an improvised explosive devise was found near a polling station in Assam's Autonomous District (ST) Lok Sabha constituency. Accoridng official sources, a police patrolling party found the IED at Disobai, under Bokolia police station of Karbi Anglong district early this morning prior to commencement of polling at 7 am. Journalists’ Forum, Assam has condemned the attitude of Himanta Biswa Sharma, the State health minister and the spokesman of Assam government, to malign the image of the media persons in Assam and asked him to identify the journalist, who had (as claimed by the minister himself) submitted the mobile call list of an individual to the minister (Sharma). Security beefed up after Kamrup Express's narrow escape

An eerie silence is prevailing in Karbi Anglong distirct a day after the Kamrup Express had a narrow escape when KLNLF militants targetted the passenger train with bombs. This has forced the poll bound district to beef up security forces to foil any attack of the Karbi rebel outfit. Mild quake in Guwahati

A mild tremor has jolted Guwahati and its adjoining areas on Sunday. The tremor was felt at 12-18 in the noon and there is no report of any casualty. The epicenter and intensity of the tremor has yet to be ascertained.

2 killed in army-KLNLF encounter

A KLNLF rebel and a civilian died at an encounter between militants and Army personnel near Dakomoka of Karbi Anglong district in Assam on Saturday morning. The incident took place an hour after the death of two policemen at an attack by DHD(J) militants in between Lumding to Badarpur. Guwahati escapes major blast as IEDs recovered

Police claimed to have foiled a major blast in Guwahati when they recovered two powerful bombs from Lakhra Chari ali in the city on Saturday morning. Both the bombs were kept in a deserted land of the area. According to information, police recovered two powerful bombs at Forest Gate near Lokhra on Saturday morning. DHD(J) attacks goods train in NC hills: 2 killed

Two policemen died when DHD(J) rebels sprayed a goods train with bullets in North Cachar hills district on Saturday. According to information, the incident took place at Langting at around 7-30 in the morning as the Silchar bound good train reached the area. The deceased were identified as Lalita Burahgohain and Bisheswar Bora. Caught in this situation, the North East Frontier railway authorities have cancelled all trains on this route.
