Mystery shrouds around missing case diaries

For more than two months the Assam government is puzzled over two TADA case diaries missing from Pan Bazar and Chandmari police stations of Guwahati. Now the case has been entrusted to the state CID for investigation, but it is not yet clear how the mystery could be solved. In the beginning Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) General Secretary Akhil Gogoi was targeted and now the decision has been taken to interrogate the former DIG Asim Roy under whose custody it is believed that the files were kept nineteen years ago. It is an interesting evidence of the functioning of the state government, which has come out of slumber after a long span of time..

It was a tug of war between the Assam Health Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma and KMSS General Secretary, Akhil Gogoi on the issue of TADA case diaries missing from these two police stations of Guwahati during the year 1996-97. It’s interesting that on record the diaries are not shown as missing at the respective police stations, but both the parties have allegations against each other. Whereas, Assam Health Minister threatens to get Akhil Gogoi implicated in the case of theft of the diaries, the later is likely to move the country’s Apex court in order to get the accused punishment and justice prevail in the case of murders and corruption. The state CID recently interrogated the KMSS General Secretary about the source from where he got the ’missing diaries’ with intention that the government could book more people in this case and save it’s face from the failures of home department in protecting the valuable and useful documents from its custody.

The state government is in a fix as Akhil Gogoi is reported to have shown the original diaries to media persons in a recent press conference, but he had informed the CID team led by Jagat Borphukan, DSP that only the Photostat copies of the diaries were given to him by ‘some body’ . However, he did not reveal the name of the source and said that he would inform the entire matter before the Supreme Court of India. The CID repeatedly questioned the KMSS General Secretary on July 26 last to reveal the source, but failed to get any clue about the case diaries of Chandmari PS No. 77/1991 and Pan Bazar PS No..15/1991 procured by him.

For quite some time a tirade of words attack was continue between the two parties and KMSS made too many allegations about sources of income and expenditure of the health minister and his family members. Both the parties threaten to take legal steps against each other, but the action is yet to be taken. It is reported that Akhil Gogoi had replied in the press meet that either the said case diaries were lying with the Health Minister in his custody or he might have destroyed them. With the continuing arguments by both the parties the people of the state have reasons to believe that there is something serious in those case diaries for which the state government wants to frame some cases against Akhil Gogoi and his associates so that the agitation launched by him and his organization against various corruptions and malpractices are stopped. On the other hand, the Health Minister has repeatedly uttered that the Gauhati High Court had already given ‘clean chit’ to the accused in those cases. If it was true there was no reason to panic and making so much hue and cry about the Photostat copies of ‘so called’ case diaries shown by Akhil Gogoi. The state government should have patience and waited for the judgment of the Apex Court, in case the KMSS moves on to it.

Despite many differences with the sayings and doings of the Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi, I share at least one of his views on an occasion that the people of Assam are ‘emotional’. He is right, I agree since watching the various affairs through which the state has passed and the CM has succeeded in having the reign of state administration successfully for about one and a half decades. Since the beginning of last phase of 20th century, I recall the memories of Assam agitation against the foreigners issue in the state right from  the year 1979. The students and the general public under the banner of All Assam Students Union (AASU) and Asom Gana Sangram Samiti (AGSS) brought the entire...

Assam Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi, is perhaps the supreme stalwart in the country, who dared to under-estimate the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi’s dynamism, capability and strength. On most of the occasions, he seems to have challenged PM, Modi in order to prove ‘himself ‘ as better being’ proud’ of ruling the state of Assam for last fourteen years. He claims himself better administrator, because he has gained mastery in dividing the people on different issues, which he has hired from the past British rulers of the country. The simple and humble people of Assam fall prey of the false stories of development without moving out to find the truth about such developments. Those who oppose and...

It is more than six months, when Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) decided to construct four city markets buildings at a time and in a hasty action a ‘mockery of foundation stone’ laying ceremony of four markets were done by nobody else than the Assam Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi himself at a single place located in densely populated area of Ulubari.
