The First Garo Food Fest was held at Meghalaya House Lawns, New Delhi on 7th October 2007. A pleasant afternoon saw Sabeena Saighal Saikia, the Editor of Delhi Times inaugurating the occasion.
A pleasant surprise for the gathering was presence of the Chief Minister DD Lapang, Deputy CM and other Ministers of Meghalaya. The visitors to the food festival included of people from the media, government, students, etc., smacking their lips and licking their fingers. Due to unexpected turnout of visitors in huge numbers, the food portion of the festival had to be close earlier as the stock of food ran out. The event continued with the jukebox and various games being organised.
Some items on the menu were Do'o Masala, Wak gominda, Wak baringbelati, Wak meammeseng pura, Wak galda ginchi pura, Do'o kappa, Dobok Bijak, Dobok bandal, Natok sroma, Natok kappa, Bika jo'a, Nakham Chutney, Nakham kappa, Bika kappa, etc. It was quite a spread for those where as yet unfamiliar with the variety of Garo (A'chik) food available in their almost everyday cuisine.
For the Delhi A'chik Youth Association, this is the first step in successfully re-introducing the Garos (A'chiks) and their culture to the National Capital.
Assam Governor Shiv Charan Mathur has recommended Bhupen Hazarika's for the Gandhi Peace Prize of 2008. According to a an official release, Mathur recommended Hazarika for the award as he is not only a great poet, lyricist, singer, author and an educationist but also held many important positions in the state as well as at the national level.The prestigious award, instituted by the Union ministry of culture, is given to individuals and institutions for their outstanding contribution towards social, economic and political transformation through non-violence and other Gandhian methods. A major incident of blast was averted when Assam Rifles recovered two powerful improvised explosive devises from a bus at Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district on Wednesday.According to information, acting on specific inputs, the 44 Assam Rifles personnel recovered the bomb from a private bus coming here from Orang around 11 am. The two explosives were safely defused by the jawans, the sources said. This is the second one case of bomb recovery this week. Earlier on Monday, a major disaster was averted when a powerful bomb kept by suspected ULFA was recovered from a Guwahati-Nalbari private long-distance bus in Nalbari district's Borkura.
Barely a few hours after the killing of 6 NDFB cadres during an encounter in Karbi Anglong, unidentified miscreants gunned down four persons of a same family of a Congress ward commissioner in Diphu on Tuesday.According to information, armed miscreants stormed into the residence of Congress ward commissioner Apu Das and gunned down Apu's wife Manju Das, two daughters and a home tutor at around 7-45 in the evening. Apu Das was not available at that moment. After a brief lull, suspected Naga rebels gunned gunned down four Dimasa persons in the trouble torn North Cachar hills district on Tuesday. According to information, the incident took place at the Norman Bunglow under Mahur police station in the hills district as they were on the way to Haflong. Six NDFB rebels were killed during a heavy gun battle with army in Karbi Anglong district on Tuesday.According to information, the encounter took place at Donghap area in the hills district on Tuesday morning. Acting on a specific information, Red Horns Division army jawans launched a massive operation in the area and thus the encounter took place for several hours. Some a few others, however, managed to escape from the spot. Operation is on to eliminate those managed to escape the firing.Army, further claimed to have recovered a huge cache of of arms and explosives, including grenades and gelatine sticks from the site.
After weeks of will-they-won't-they, police have arrested Bokakhat MLA Jiten Gogoi who have physically assaulted a forest official two months back at the Kaziranga National Park.Gogoi was arrested a day after the Gauhati High Court has rejected his anticipatory bail plea he moved after police initiated action to arrest him. Notably, Gogoi with Thowra MLA and former ULFA rebel Kushal Duwari assulted a forest official at the KNP when they were denied permission to fish inside the park. The court further has rejected Kushal Duwari's anticipatory bail plea and since then he has been missing.
