The Assam Don Bosco University launched PhD (Doctoral) Programmes in 24 areas of research in 8 disciplines at a function held at its Azara Campus near Guwahati airport on 23 August 2011. The areas of current socially relevant study include Social Work and North-East India Studies, as well as scientific research in Physics, Chemical Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Forensic Science and Computer Science.
While archbishop Thomas Menamparampil of Guwahati, an outstanding peace negotiator in northeast India inaugurated these programmes, Dr Sebastian Karotemprel, an eminent scholar in northeast India and former president of Sacred Heart College Shillong spoke on ‘University and Research’.
Most Rev Thomas Menamparampil, Chief Guest“Higher education and research constitute the backbone of University systems as they focus on the promotion of the human mind, the search for truth, the development of knowledge Experts, the evolution of culture, and the betterment of life in all its myriad manifestations,” Dr Karotemprel said.
He insisted, “while graduate education is largely geared to raise the level of employability of students, training them to play leadership roles in providing the services on which a developed society depends, such as chemists, accountants, nurses, social workers, psychologists, museum curators, professors, teachers, and business managers, research is central to our survival and advancement in a digitalized, knowledge-based, global economy.”
The DBU Vice-Chancellor Dr Stephen Mavely presented the genesis of these programmes, the collaborations tied up and on the planning that went into them.

Following the time-hallowed traditions of the great universities of the world, “Don Bosco University seeks to make itself as a centre for culture, knowledge, research, Intellectual ferment, for critical thinking and analysis of whatever shapes and impacts human life, a centre that influences thinking, planning and policy making on vital aspects of social life such as religion, culture, society, politics, governance, education, health care, and more,” Dr Mavely explained.
The Vice-Chancellor of DBU which entered its fourth academic year did not hesitate to note that, “these objectives have been carefully enunciated to invite and attract the right type of candidates for research programmes in the University – we are looking for bright young men and women with a passion for excellence and scholarship, and experienced guides and mentors with a flair for enthusing young minds with the thirst ‘to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield’ while taking on challenging research projects and assignments in the University.”
Dr Sebastian KarotemprelBesides the students who signed up for these study and research programmes, members of the research faculties include Prof Sebastian Karotemprel SDB (Expert in North-East India Studies), Dr Paul Pudussery CSC (Expert in Research Methodology), Prof RN Khound (Expert in Forensic Sciences), Prof JN Viswakarma (Expert in Green Chemistry), Prof Basil Koikara (Expert in Mathematics and Computational Methods), Prof Shakuntala Laskar (Expert in Opto Electronics), Dr Monmayuri Baruah (Expert in Astro Physics), Prof Inam Ahmed Shastri (Expert in Social Work), Prof Durlav Hazarika (Expert in Embedded Systems), and Prof Jayanta Singh (Expert in Artificial Intelligence).
Other new post graduate courses introduced in this year include M. Tech. in Electronics and Communication (Opto-electronics and Optical Communication); M. Tech. in Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence), and Master of Social Work (SW). Post Graduate Diploma in Child Rights and Development (PGDCRD) is a new sector that needs urgent attention in the region.
