The district level women's sports festival,under PYKKA (Panchayat Yuva Krida aur Khel Abhiyan) of Udalguri district concluded recently at Tangla on October 28 and 29.Thaneswar Malakar,Deputy Commissioner, Udalguri district inaugurated the two days 'Women's Sports Festival' at 9 AM on October 28 after Madhaw Prasad Sarma,PD,DRDA,Udalguri cum Chairman, DLEC,PYKKA,Udalguri and Debendra Nath Sargiari,Vice President,Tangla Sports Association had hoisted the flags of PYKKA and Tangla Sports Association respectively. Speaking on the occasion DC Malakar said that Father of the Nation had clearly declared thatIndia's freedom was not possible with out active participation of the women of the country.He also said that development of society was impossible without all round development of women and girls.He inaugurated the two days women festival by throwing a hand ball.
A few distinguished persons of the district,namely -DN Hazarika,Circle Officer, Harisinga Revenue Circle;Ishahak Khaklari,District Sports Officer,Udalguri and Debanga Mahaliya,In-Charge,PYKKA,Udalguri attended the inaugural ceremony at Tangla Higher Secondary field.The following events like-atheletics,kho-kho,volley ball,basket ball,hand ball,kabaddi,badminton,table tenis and hockey were organized for girls and women of the district.More over a few noted sports persons of the district,who had shown excellence in various sports events out side the state were also felicitated on the occasion.

In a very tragic and barbaric incident, Puspanjali Das (19)wife of Chandan Debnath of Thakuriapara village under Bhergaon sub-division in Udalguri district has been burnt down alive on Saturday noon for non-payment of marriage dowry. The incident has shocked the district. The lady was put in a sac before thrown in a fire lighted in a heap of hay. Puspanjali was married to Chandan just three months bac. Narayan Debnath, father-in-law of Puspanjali has been arrested while trying to flee but all the family members managed to flee before being caught.
