Tributes paid to Martyr Pranjal Saikia on his first death anniversary

The first death anniversary of martyr Pranjal Pratim Saikia was observed with reverence at his residence on Thursday. Police officials including IGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, DIG Anurag Tankha,(Upper Assam) AIG,Law & Order, Bedanta Madhab Rajkhowa , Nagaon SP Sunil Kumar and a large number of civil society members as well as people from different walks of life also present on the occasion held at his parents’ residence at Dighaliati village under Raha Police Station. The programme started around 11.30am and continued throughout the day. People laid floral wreaths and showered petals on the tomb built in the memory of the martyr by his family members


“The police are extremely proud of the bravery and the supreme sacrifice of one of its finest officers Pranjal Saikia. Son of school teacher parents of Raha posted in Tinsukia district when he along with his troops killed two terrorists and saved many lives as these terrorists were planning wanton killing of civilian targets. We salute the brave soul,” said Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta.


Speaking on the occasion, Anurag Tankha,DIG, ( Upper Assam ), the then principal trainer,Police Training Centre,Dergaon recalled his days with Pranjal while the martyr was undergoing training. Citing a sloka from the Bhagavad Gita, the DIG said, “ It makes me very sad today that being a Guru ( teacher ) of Pranjal, I am attending his death anniversary”. He said, “ Pranjal was a hero, a true patriotic and I feel proud that I trained him at Police training Centre,Dergaon.”


Bedanta Madhav Rajkhowa, AIG, Law & Order also spoke on the occasion. A soveniour in memory of the martyr was also released on by Kamal Chandra Sharma,ex-principal,Raha H S School.


It should be mentioned here that Pranjal was born Born in 1982 at Dighaliati village of Raha. He was the second son of retired school teacher Jhulan Saikia. He had joined the Assam Police in 2009 and was posted as Probationary Sub-Inspector of Police at Kakopathar in Tinsukia district. He laid down his life in the line of duty while raiding, along with his team, an ULFA hideout at Tongona village under the Kakopathar police station on March 15,2011. The police officer was hit by two bullets fired by militants and he died on the spot.Two members of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) were also killed by Pranjal and his team in the fighting.

Tiwa blockade on NH 37 in Raha

Normal surface communication on the National Highway-37 remained heavily disrupted on Tuesday when the All Tiwa Students’ Union blocked it demanding inclusion of the Tiwa Autonomous areas in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. This is apart from the demand to arrest of Council CEM Rama Kanta Deori. Guitarist dies in mishap

A guitarist died a tragic death at a road mishap in Raha casting a spell of gloom in the area on Friday.The incident took place when a speeding Indica car rammed into his two wheeler at Phulaguri at noon as he was trying to cross the four lane highway.Identified as Lakshi Prashad Bora, the motorcyclist was a popular guitarist who was an inhabitant of Ghahi Bhaticuri village.

One crushed to death in Raha

Speeding trucks have been an agent of death on the National Highway these days. An oil tanker crushed to death a person in Raha on Thursday. The shocking incident took place at Jongal Balahu Garh when identified as Prafulla Biswas, the person was run over by a Guwahati bound oil tanker as he was trying to cross the four-lane National Highway in the afternoon.

Goat gives birth to monkey!

Its strange but true. A money like kid is born. But the mother is a goat. The bizarre incident took place at Madhya Tupakuchi in Raha on Thursday morning. A tiny hamlet in Raha suddenly drew the attention of thousands of the people when a goat gave birth to two kids which resembled a monkey. Talking to Assam Times, the owner said,” I could not believe my eyes. I am at my wit’s end. What to do.” The heads resembled the face of monkey features– the eyes, the nose and the mouth – only the ears were those of a goat. "This incident is very shocking. It is my first time to see such an unnatural thing. It is really embarrassing," an onlooker told Assam Times after she came to see the kids.

Tiwa CEM’s effigy burnt in Raha

Tiwa Students on Friday burnt the effigy of Rama Kanta Dewri in Raha to protest the recent attack on two of their colleagues. The students of Raha and Barapujia thronged the National Highway at Raha and burnt the effigy of the TAC chief. Led by ATSU president Prahlad Mosrong, the students further demanded Dewri’s arrest in this connection. Notably, the student body on Thursday called for the 12 hour central Assam bandh in this connection.

ATSU bandh peaceful

The 12-hour middle Assam bandh called by All Tiwa Students' Union (ATSU ) today passed off peacefully at Raha and its neighbouring areas Dharamtul, Ahatguri, Chaparmukh,Barapujia, Phulaguri, Demow without any untoward incident. All government offices, educational institutions and shops and business establishments remained closed as the bandh paralysed normal life here. Talking to the Assam Times police said no untoward incident was reported and the situation remained peaceful because of tight security.The NH 37 wore a deserted look with no vehicle, except those carrying sick people to hospitals, plying on the roads.

Bandh paralyzes life in Central Assam

Normal life comes to a grindng halt in the Central Assam districts following the 12 bandh call by two Tiwa organizations on on Thursday. Vehicles are off from the roads. Schools and colleges, shops and markets have been remaining closed under the impact of the bandh which began at 5 in the morning.  The All Assam Tiwa Students Union and Tiwa Autonomous Council have called for a 12 hour central Assam bandh in protest against the alleged attack on its two leaders. ATSU president Prahlad Mosrong told Assam Times that the miscreants attacked two of its leaders namely Biju Pator and Karmananda Bordoloi recently.

AASU all out against ASEB

The Raha unit of All Assam Students' Union ( AASU ) has expressed deep concern at the development centering round the transferring of all consumer relating official works of Raha ASEB office to Morigaon ASEB office and proposed inclusion of Raha ASEB office with Morigaon circle from the present Nagaon circle as decided by the ASEB higher authority from September 1, 2014. 2 injured in Raha mishap

Two persons sustained injury when a vehicle carrying them met with a mishap near Raha in Nagaon district on Monday. The mishap took place at Bagariguri at 7.30 in the morning. Identified as Moidul Islam and Hibzur Rahman, the injured were rushed to the Nagaon Civil Hospital.
