An eerie silence is prevailing in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts following the death of two people belonging to different communities amid growing demand to evict the non tribals from the hills districts on Tuesday.
Mobile internet has been suspended and the authority has imposed some restrictions on public gatherings to ensure peace and tranquility in the tribal dominated hills districts.
Security forces are patrolling on the streets in the vulnerable areas to avert any untoward incident.
But the tribal leaders and their followers have blamed it all on the government for allowing the non tribals to settle there which is contrary to the laid down rules.
" We are dead opposed to the settlement of the Hindi speaking people here. We would join the protest further," said a tribal leader.
A Karbi woman blamed the ruling BJP for it and rued that BJP has brought the Hindi speaking people just to get their votes in the election.
"The BJP is in the know that the tribals are averse to vote for BJP snv and that's why, they want to help Biharis and Marearis settle here to get vote. We won't allow these to happen," she said.
A student leader who refused to be named said they are gearing up for more intensified protest to evict the illgal settlers and that without active support from the influential people these are quite impossible.
Notably, a tribal youth and a non tribal man died at a protest demanding eviction of illgal settlers in Kheroni area on Tuesday.
