The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Wednesday submitted a detailed “Chargesheet 2026” against the BJP-led Assam government, symbolically placing it before what it termed the “People’s Court of Assam.” The chargesheet targets the government headed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, covering the period from May 10, 2021 to February 18, 2026.
In a press briefing in Guwahati, APCC leaders alleged large-scale corruption, economic mismanagement, constitutional violations, and failure to protect the rights of indigenous communities. The document lists 20 major charges, including the alleged operation of a “syndicate raj,” accumulation of illegal wealth, rising public debt, and failure to deliver on promises such as Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six communities — Koch Rajbongshi, Tai Ahom, Moran, Motok, Chutia and Tea Tribes.
The Congress also accused the government of weakening public institutions, citing alleged irregularities flagged in CAG reports, growing unemployment, closure and merger of thousands of schools, and vacancies in the health sector. It further alleged failure to address recurring floods and erosion, claiming lakhs of people continue to be affected annually without a permanent solution.
On the issue of land and environment, the APCC alleged that tribal and indigenous lands were handed over to corporate groups for industrial and infrastructure projects. It also raised concerns over illegal coal mining, environmental degradation, and the drug menace in the state.
The chargesheet criticises the government’s handling of the NRC process, alleging that prolonged uncertainty has caused hardship to citizens despite significant public expenditure. It further claims that freedom of expression and press independence have been undermined through intimidation and misuse of state machinery.
Calling it a “people’s indictment,” the APCC urged voters to “hold the government accountable for corruption, broken promises and misuse of power” in the upcoming elections. The party said the final verdict now rests with the people of Assam.
There was no immediate response from the state government or the BJP at the time of filing this report.
