The first general conference of the newly formed District Press Club, Goalpara was held on Sunday with a day-long programme at Assam Club, Goalpara. The programme was started in the morning with the flag hoisting by Syed Rabiul Haque, president, District Press Club, Goalpara and smriti tarpan by and Abdur Rauf, senior journalist, respectively. At 11 am, the general meeting was held in which several topics of journalism were discussed.


Noted journalist Dilip Kumar Sharma said the journalist should take always active role in any kind of social problems. The newly elected body took their charge from the organizing committee from the same meeting. Later in the afternoon, the open session presided over by Syed Rabiul Haque, president of the club, was held. Attending as the chief guest, Deputy Commissioner Pritam Saikia, after inaugurating the open session said that the journalism has a great role in the development of the society. He also urged the journalist to be true and honest in journalism.


Participating in the session both Madhusudan Das, noted artitst and Sukracharya Rabha, noted youth dramatist confessed how media helped them in their respective field of activites. Several journalists from various parts of the district participated in the conference.

Hundreds of vehicles destined to Guwahati and Goalpara as well as to Meghalaya were left stranded at Dudhnoi in Goalpara district along the National Highways 37 and 62 following road blockade n Wednesday by various students organisations led by All Rabha Students Union (ARSU) demanding immediate release of the two abducted teachers. Wild tuskers kills one at Dhupdhara

A 45 year old person was trampled to death by a wild tusker in the forest of Khekapara village near Dhupdhara in Goalpara district yesterday. The deceased has been identified as Prafulla Ray of Khekapara village. The incident came in the light today when some of local villagers found the dead body of the person in the jungle. According to family sources, Prafulla Ray went to the jungle for firewood yesterday, but he failed to return to home. As for the last ten days, a herd of wild elephant were seen in the same jungle, and so it is suspected that the person was attacked by the wild tuskers. Woman Commits Suicide at Dudhnoi

Sensation prevails in Goalpara district when a 22 years old newly married woman committed suicide by burning herself with kerosene oil at her father's residence at Lela-Pukhuripara under Dudhnoi police station in Goalpara district on Friday morning. The deceased has been identified as Nibedita Rabha who was married last month to one Manoj Rabha of Amjonga in Dudhnoi. According to sources, Nibedita came to her father's residence on Thursday with her husband. But on Friday morning she committed suicide under mysterious circumstances since the reasons behind her step could not be made out. Later, the body was sent to Goalpara by Dudhnoi police for postmortem.

Powerful IED Recovered at Damra

A powerful improvised explosive device (IED) was recovered by the Army on Saturday from Damra area bordering Assam-Meghalaya in Goalpara district. The IED, weighing around five kg. was recovered under a culvert on Damra-Mendipathar road at Habangiri village under Damra police outpost. The device was recovered after the Ninth Sikh Li Regiment of Indian Army camping at Damra, received an information about it. The explosive has been removed from the spot and taken to the nearby paddy field of the same village for diffusing. No one was arrested in this regard so far.

Three Killed in Road Mishap

Three persons were killed and ten others injured in a head-on collision between bus and a passenger Sawari at Solmari-Kalyanpur under Agia police station in Goalpara district on the Goalpara-Agia road at about 3 pm today.The accident occurred when 'Maa Taara', a speedy passenger bus (AS 19C-0699) from Goalpara on its way to Bongaigaon tried to overtake another vehicle, rammed into a Sawari passenger vehicle (AS01 AC-2109) plying from the opposite direction. Two killed in road accident at Daranggiri

Two persons died and three others injured in a road mishap when a speeding truck hit another loaded truck parked on the roadside of NH37 at Daranggiri in Goalpara district on Saturday morning. Sources said that the truck (AR 09A/2853), heading towards Guwahati, hit another parked truck (WB 73B/8257) at around 4.00 am. The collision was so powerful that the parked truck was turned over roadside and the other truck hit a house neasrby the spot. One of the deceased was identified as Atowar Rahman, the driver of the parked truck, but the other is yet to be identified. Police said that the driver of the hitting truck escaped immediately after the accident took place.

Four NDFB and three GNLA cadres arrested in Dudhnoi and Lakhipur

Four NDFB and three GNLA cadres were arrested in three different search operations on Wednesday. In the first operation, launched by the police and CRPF jawans, one NDFB cadre was held at Mandalgram of Dudhnoi in Goalpara. The cadre has been identified as Tony Lal Basumatary. One pistol made in USA and one bike along with some other documents were recovered from his possession. Whereas a few hours later, three out of four GNLA cadres were arrested by the army at Dainadubi of the Assam-Meghalaya border. Two killed in road accident at Dudhnoi

Two people were killed when a car slammed into a truck that was parked on NH 37 at Dudhnoi in Golapara district in the wee hours of Sunday. The accident occurred when a full speed maruti zen car (ML 05C-0088) moving from Shillong to Kokrajhar hit the back of the truck (AS 02-E-4798), which was parked in front of the Banabasi temple of Dudhnoi. The car driver and the truck handyman died on the spot, whereas three others who critically injured were first admitted to Dudhnoi hospital and later shifted to Goalpara civil hospital. The deceased were yet to be identified.

U-17 Inter District Women Football Tournament

Dibrugarh emerged champion in the All Assam U-17 Inter District Women Football Tournament defeating Baksa by a margin of 3-2 goals, played at Dhupdhara in Goalpara District on Sunday. The tournament was organised by Dhupdhara Bikali Sports Association under the aegis of All Assam Football Association. In the 7th minute of the match Dorothi Orea of Dibrugarh scored the 1st goal.
