Our Guwahati Correspondent : Over 1.5 lakh people in seven districts of Assam have been affected in the first wave of floods with the Brahmaputra, Barak and their tributaries flowing above danger levels.
People in flood-hit Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Sibsagar, Dibrugarh, Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi districts have taken shelter on national highways, officials said, adding the BSF has been engaged in rescue operations.
Nearly 84 villages in Karimganj with a population of 42,386 have been inundated with water over-crossing a dyke.
In Cachar district, flood waters entered some parts of Silchar town as a dyke breached in Roypur. Three relief camps have been set up in the affected area, the officials said.
The Brahmaputra was flowing above danger mark in Dibrugarh, thereby threatening a dyke near Maijan protecting Dibrugarh city.
The affected people in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts complained that the administration had failed to take steps to prevent the flooding.
In Dhemaji district, 25 villages with a population of 11,057 have been affected and standing crops in 1,549 hectares have been damaged, the officials said.
The Desang river eroded 30 meters at Betabari Chetia Kaiborta village in Sibsagar district, they said, adding the Water Resource Department was taking measures to prevent further damage.
All rivers in Karimganj, Hailkandi and Cachar districts were also flowing above danger level due to incessant rains for the last few days with the advent of the Monsoon.
Rivers Longai and Kushiyara in Karimganj district were also rising above danger mark, submerging low-lying areas.
Latest reports indicate that in Goalpara and Dhubri water is rising whereas in areas like Nimatigath,Tezpur and Dibrugarh it is going down.

A minor boy was killed and five others have been injured when a power grenade exploded a crowded market in Udalguri on Monday. The incident took place when two motorcycle born militants lobbed a grenade as they drove through a busy market, killing the minor boy and wounding five other people. Top ranked police and civil officials rushed to the spot. No outfit has so far claim the responsibility for the attack.
An Airtel employee was injured when armed miscreants attacked him in Nagaon town on Monday. There is report of simmering tension in Dhubri town when police sprang upon a group of protestors at a police station on Monday. Around 500 women of the IG Road area of Dhubri staged a peaceful dharna before the Dhubri police station this morning to protest against the detention of five youths late last night who had been picked up on the suspicion of being involved in the violence. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi and his Manipur counterpart, Okram Ibobi Singh, are dead opposed to any move by the Centre to agree to NSCN (IM)'s demand for territorial integration of Naga- inhabited areas of Assam and Manipur with Nagaland.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Friday, Gogoi said that NSCN (IM) wants to carve out a greater Nagaland by including all Naga-inhabited areas of Manipur, Assam and Arunchal Pradesh to the present state of Nagaland. According to him, the Centre should have held consultation with Dispur before reaching such a pact.
