Doordarshan team distributes relief materials

A Guwahati Doordarshan team on Saturday visited two relief camps in the violence-hit Kokrajhar district, distributed relief materials among the inmates and expressed solidarity with them.

Debendra Nath Basumatary, Deputy Director General, programme, Doordarshan Kendra, Guwahati, led a team of DDK employees to the trouble-hit Kokrajhar district of Assam, where they visited two relief camps. The first visit was to Rupnath Brahma Memorial High School camp at Gambari Bil. The camp inmates were Bodos. Explaining the reason behind the visit, Basumatary said a sense of fellow-feelings and humanity had brought the team near the people who suffered. The team also had a mission to promote a sprit tolerance and a sense of universal brotherhood between diverse groups of people.

The next visit was to Bhotgaon High School camp at Jaipur. Here the inmates were members of the religious minority. Talking to the victims, Basumatary expressed the hope that peace and tranquility would ultimately prevail in the society. In the holy month of Ramadan, nothing could be a better prayer to the Almighty than this, he added.

The materials the DDK team distributed in the camps included rice, dal, potatoes, sugar, salt, tea leaves, biscuits, mosquito nets, mekhela-sadars and saris. A DDK employee extended a sum of two thousand rupees as jakaat at the Bhotgaon camp.

Talking to this correspondent, who visited the district on Saturday with a team of Government employees with relief materials, Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner Jayant Narlikar said many victims had already returned home. On State Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s public promise that the victims’ return would be complete by August 15, Narlikar was ambiguous in his reply. He said: “What the CM Sir has actually meant is an emphasis on accelerating their return.” But the victims don’t buy this view. Inmates in...
