Blast in the Time of Festival: 5 dead, 20 injured

Guwahati: In yet another ‘handiwork,’ ULFA explodes a powerful bomb in the busy Machkhowa areas on Saturday morning at around 7-30 which left four people dead and more than twenty injured.

The blast that rocks again in the time of the grand Ambubachi mela atop Kamakhya and Asian Athletic Grand Prix at Sarusajai, took place in front of a mosque. All those four were killed on the spot.

The bomb was placed beside a small tea stall at the daily fruit and vegetable market. Most of the vendors and visitors were not present in the morning when the bomb exploded.

The injured people have been admitted to the nearby hospital for treatment by the people who rushed to the spot hearing the huge sound the blast made. The conditions of four of these people are critical.

Immediately after the incident, police and top ranked police and civil officials including the Deputy Commissioner Abinash Joshi arrived in the spot and started investigation. Later talking to the reporters on the spot, Mr Joshi says the blast is a handiwork of ULFA.

Meanwhile, the city police beefs up security arrangement in view of the grand fair and festival at the Kahakhya temple and also to ensure security to the athletes across the Asian countries in view of the 16th Asian Grand Prix. The event is inaugurated on Saturday by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

Panic spreads among those who gatecrash the Kamakhya temple premises to participate in the on going Ambubashi fair. These people have arrived in the fair spot from the last week.

This is second blast in Muslim area within weeks. The last week was - The explosion took place at a predominantly Muslim area in village Gulutuk in Kamrup district, 50 km from Guwahati. The Guluktuk blast - "The blast was carried out at the behest of the RSS and was executed by the organisation's youth wing with Abhijit Sarma as the kingpin," ULFA spokesman Raju Baruah said in a statement received by IANS. "Sarma is a member of RSS's youth wing," the statement said. How can a place which is 100% Muslim - a bomb blast ? This is the main question which the local people's should think.

A businessman died as he was attacked by miscreants in the city on Tuesday. The incident took place at Ganeshguri area when the armed miscreants started firing at the business when he was on the way to deposit a huge amount of money at Punjab National Bank. The decease was identified as Keshab Phukan. Phukan fell on the ground after the miscreants sprayed several rounds of bullets on his body. The miscreants took away Phukan's bag and disappeared. Phukan was rushed to the International Hospital where he was declared brought dead. Investigation is on.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is recovering a day after he underwent two complex heart surgeries at the Asian Heart Institute on Wednesday. According to official sources, the team of doctors attending on Gogoi led by Dr RK Panda is quite satisfied with the post surgery condition. On Thursday his wife Dolly Gogoi along with his son Gautam and daughter Chandrima visited him at the ICU. The doctors has put off ventilator support in view of his improved condition.
Another string of edeadly violence was averted in Guwahati when security forces recovered ten hand grenades at a railway station on Thursday. The hand grenades were kept inside a bag which was put at the Paltanbazar Railway Station premises at around 5 in the afternoon. Constable Satish Barman reported it to the authorities. Police suspect it an abortive attempt by ULFA and NDFB.
Meghalaya police have registered a cheating case against two Assam sports officials charging them with impersonating as members of Meghalaya Hockey Association a day before Hockey India elections on Thursday. According to information, these officials in question are Raj Kakoti and Sumita Sinha. The action came up after the Meghalaya Olympic Association lodged a complaint against them. Assam Chief Minister is quite stable after two complicated heart surgeries on Wednesday. Talking to media after th end of 6-hour long surgeries, Dr Ramakanta panda who was leading teh team of doctors said a new valve has been installed while the old one was removed.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is undergoing two complex bypass heart surgeries in Mumbai. According to information, Gogoi was wheeled out of the cabin no. 501 to the special operation at 6 in the morning. A team of 22 cardiologists led by Dr Ramakanta Panda is performing the surgeries at the Asian Heart Institute. Apart from these experts, Dr Nava Goswami from Cleveland Clinic and Dr Anjanjyoti Bhattacharya from GMCH are beside the ailing chief minister. According to the hospital sources, the surgeries are expected to take 5 to 6 hours.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has setup a cabinet committee to deal with the NRC project. Chaired by caretaker Chief Minister Dr Bhumidhar Barman the cabinet panel will ensure NRC the pilots are more convenient and simple.
