What turned road to death trap

12 Jan 2018 - 7:07pm | AT News

MARGHERITA: The much-hyped fresh lease of life in the country's surface communication sector has been proved a futile one if one travels on the Margherita-Pengree Road. The local residents reposed faith on the Sarbananda Sonowal Government who promised to uplift the road condition. Accordingly, a huge portion ofthe road was repaired. But within a short spell of five months the entire portion has become non motorable and the local residents here blame the poor quality of materials used in it.

Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma opened the road after the repairing and maintenance works were over on May 6, 2017.  But the entire vital road repaired under the Assam Road Maintenance Scheme with a budget of Rs 4. 75 cr of 25.20 km length now in a bad shape. The local residents have blamed the authority for awarding the contract to a controversial person in Tinsukia.

Tinsukia district AASSAA General Secretary Ramanus Lakra said the people have voted BJP to power in 2016 and Bhaskar Sharma was elected as MLA. But nothing has changed. The people here now have seen hardly any difference between former Margherita MLA Pradyut Bordoloi and the present one Bhaskar Sharma. Lakra has moved Margherita SDO(Civil), Tinsukia District Deputy Commissioner and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal demanding a high level enquiry into the scam and punishment for the people involved in it.

Curfew reimposed in Diphu

4 Aug 2013 - 9:35pm | AT News

Karbi Anglong district administration reimposed the curfew on Sunday after relaxing it between 8am and 12pm. Miscreants also removed railway tracks near Doldoli in the district, disrupting train services through the hill district to upper Assam and Dimapur.

The various organisations threatened to intensify the agitation for a separate state on the lines of Telangana. The 100-hr hills district bandh in Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao, called by Hills State Democratic Party (HSDP) and scheduled to begin tomorrow, has been deferred in view of the prevailing situation in Karbi Anglong.
