Assam players won golds at the International Invitation Karate Championship 2013 held at University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka on June 9.

The winners are Manjit Dihingia – 2 Golds, Raju Kachari – 1 Gold, Dipu Tanti – 1 Gold and Sushmita Paul – 1 Gold.

Eight IRB jawans along with five others sustained serious injury in Dima Hasao district at a tragic mishap on Monday.The mishap took place in the wee hours when the bus carrying the IRB jawans collided its head on a dumper at Harangajao area on their way to Nagaon to be deployed in election duty slated for April 24.The IRB jawans were believed to have been coming from Tripura. The injured have been shifted to the Harangajao Hospital where they are battling for life.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Sunday claimed to have firmly deal with Bangladeshi infiltration from across the border.Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Sunday, Gogoi said,”we have done a lot. More needs to be done. But I can say that the infiltration from across the Indo-Bangla border is on the decline.”He said BJP has no right to take on his government citing unabated infiltration of Bangladeshi immigrants.  
The Assam government has stepped up efforts to stop rhino poaching in Kaziranga.Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Sunday, chief minister Tarun Gogoi said that apart from imparting training for forest guards, they would soon procure sophisticated weapons to deal with the poachers who have been striking the Kaziranga National Park.“Rhino poaching must be stopped. We are here to stop it,” said the chief minister after he was caught in a barrage of controversy and criticism across the state.         
The Opposition Asom Gana Parishad on Sunday lambasted Congress and BJP for flooding false promises in the time of Lok Sabha polls.Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Sunday, senior party leader Atul Bora said that both the national parties have no dearth of poll promises. But only to be ignored after the election.He said that the BJP’s poll manifesto have been lots of promises for the north east. But these promises often go missing in the national level.He further criticized Guwahati BJP candidate Bijoya Chakrabartty alleging that he remain silent in Parliament and is found vocal only outside the House.        
AGP came down heavily on BJP and Congress alleging that both the national parties are trying to mislead the voters with some fabricated facts on the regional party.Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Sunday, AGP president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta claimed to have received encouraging support by the voters in the first and second phase of Lok Sabha polls.He admitted that BJP has done more harm to AGP hijacking its senior leaders. According to Mahanta, the voters are intelligent and that they won’t be influenced by the wrong facts.Replying to a question on the AGP-BJP pacts in the earlier polls, Mahanta said that the situation at that time required the alliance which did not work.
Once again miscreants from Arunachal Pradesh unleashed terror among the local residents of Sonari raising doubts over the sincerity of the police forces posted along the inter state border.The incident took place in No 2 Charaipung near Sonari in Sivasagar district where a group of miscreants storm in to the area where tea garden workers house.The miscreants, who arrived on Saturday night assaulted a few local workers of the Borjan tea estate. Even they misbehaved with a few women who came out to resist them move.They further asked the workers to vacate the place to avoid dire consequences.Local tea garden workers told Assam Times that the incident took place at a stone’s throw distance...
Narendra Modi has rescheduled his visit to Assam. The BJP’s prime ministerial candidate will hold three rallies on April 19.Earlier, he was scheduled to hold a huge rally at Dhubri on April 17. But it was rescheduled to April 19.    
Five persons died and at 20 others sustained injury at a tragic road mishap in Barpeta on Saturday.The incident took place at Amtal in the evening when the vehicle carrying them collided its head on a passenger bus. Identified as Dulal Ali, the driver of the vehicle died on the spot while four others died in hospital.  
The Election Commission has issued a show cause notice to Nazrul Islam alleging violation of the model code of conduct by the Food and Civil Supplies Minister.The country’s poll panel issued the notice acting on a complaints by BJP for his alleged communal remark at an election meeting in Hojai on March 21.Dr Islam will have to reply to the notice by 11.30 am on April 15 or necessary action would be initiated against him.According to the complaint, Islam had said that if Narendra Modi becomes Prime Minister, it would be very bad for the Muslim community. He had also said Modi became the Chief Minister of Gujarat after killing many Muslims.
