The first phase of Lok Sabha polls has provided young voters to participate in the world’s greatest democratic process on Monday in Assam.Over 6.5 lakh first time voters in the age group of 18 to 19 years registered in the state this time. From early in the morning the voters, mostly the young ones, were seen enthusiastically lining up to exercise their franchise.
The polling is by and large peaceful in the five Lok Sabha constituencies where fate of 51 voters are sealed in EVMs.Polling was summarily disrupted where at least 33 electronic voting machines malfunctioned in Dibrugarh, Kaliabor, Tezpur and Lakhimpur constituencies.Of them, 29 were later replaced. The snags in the others voting machines were rectified and the voting continued uninterrupted till the end.
Four voters, including a woman, suffered minor injuries when they clashed with CRPF personnel deployed in Koliabor constituency on Monday.The incident took place at a both in Sarupathar Silonijan area when the voters were forcibly proceeding to cast their votes early.The situation was brought under control at the intervention of the authorities.
Jorhart tops with 55 per cent voter turn out till 1 in the afternoon in the first phase of Lok Sabha pollings on Monday.Voters----both men and women are lined up in front of the polling booths to exercise their franchise.Dibrugarh has registered 48 per cent turn out till 1 in the afternoon while the figure stands at 43 per cent in Koliabor.. Lakhimpur records 41 per cent while 37 per cent voters have exercised their franchise in Tezpur till 1 in the afternoon. Barring some technical glitches, pollings are by and large peaceful.
BJP state president and Lakhimpur candidate Sarbananda Sonowal said that the people want change of guard at the Centre.Talking to reporters after casting his vote in Chabua, Sonowal said that his party will top the tally this time in Assam. Sonowal arrived at the polling booth in Chabua at around 12 noon where he exercised his franchise at 12-15 in the afternoon.
AICC poll observer for Assam Oscar Fernandes said that the ruling party in the state will be able to put up a wonderful performance in the first phase of Lok Sabha polls on Monday.Fernandes who has arrived to monitor the polling for the party told reporters that dissidence and dissatisfaction among the ruling party will not leave any adverse impact on the poll prospect. He said that the voters are impressed at the wonderful performance of the Tarun Gogoi government in the state.
A huge turnout is expected in five constituencies where the first phase of Lok Sabha pollings are taking place on Monday.Voters----both new and old are waiting in long queues in front of the polling booths to exercise their franchise as soon as the voting began at 7 in the morning.Jorhat and Dibrugarh ok Sabha seats have registered 35 per cent turn out till 12 noon. At 12 noon, the voters’ turn out in Koliabor is 17 per cent. Same picture was seen in Lakhimpur, and Tezpur where polling is underway with brisk note. Barring some technical glitches, pollings are by and large peaceful.
Despite polling day, security forces are spreading across the state in view of ULFA foundation day on Monday.High alert is being sounded in the vital railway stations, roads, bridges, oil and gas installations fearing ULFA strike on its foundation day.ULFA militants have hoisted flags in the wee hours in several districts to be seized by police in the morning.Maximum alert has been sounded in the five Lok sabha constituencies where voting is underway from 7 in the morning.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is confident that the ruling party would be able to win all the five seats where the first phase of Lok Sabha poll is taking place on Monday.Talking to reporters minutes after casting his votes at DC Baruah Girls’ HS School on Monday morning, Gogoi said that the ruling party would cash in on the division of opposition votes where AGP candidate Pradeep Hazarika is contesting.“Whatever my government has done during my tenure as chief minister is best of all the states in the country. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi casted his vote at a heavily attended polling booths on Monday morning. Accompanied by his wife Dolly Gogoi, the chief minister joined the queue of voters for nearly 30 minutes at the DC Baruah Girls HS School at No 10 Jorhat ward. He casted his vote at 9-50 in the morning.Hours before that his son Gaurab Gogoi also exercised his franchise before leaving for Koliabor where he is contesting as the Congress candidate.
