Very happy to know that the association is continuing to do well and growing. I had the privilege of being the President of the association around 1981-82 when I was a Professor of IIT-Madras ( now Chennai). During Assam Movement, we published the Brahmaputra Beckons. The state election authorities have strictly prohibited smoking in all polling booths during the upcoming three-phase Lok Sabha elections from April 7.A team of the organisation led by VHAA executive secretary Ruchira Neog called upon CEO Vijayendra on Wednesday requesting him to issue an order in this connection. The CEO assured them of steps to look into the matter.Smoking at polling booths, which are categorised as public places, was banned under Section 4 of the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003.
KMSS president Akhil Gogoi on Thursday announced a list of poll candidates to be voted in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Gogoi appealed to the people to vote for Sarbananda Sonowal, Rajen Gohain, Rameswar Teli, Kabindra Purkayasha and Ram Prasad Sarma.He said that AGP candidate Dr Arun Sarma and Birendra Prasad Baishya, Madhab Rajbanshi should be elected in Koliabor, Guwahati, Mongoldoi respectively. In Barpeta, Gogoi said, the voters should support U Barman (CPI) and Pratima Inghi from CPI(ML) should be supported in Diphu.

The election commission is gearing up efforts to ensure free and fair Lok Sabha polls in Assam beginning from April 7.Talking to reporters in Guwahati on Thursday, state chief election officer Vijyandra said that altogether 64 lakh voters will exercise their franchise at 8,500 booths in the first phase of polling.He said that of the 8,500 polling booths, 2150 have been identified as sensitive while 115 others are hypersensitive. This phase will cover Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Koliabor, Tezpur and Lakhimpur.
BJP candidate for Guwahati Bijaya Chakrabartty on Thursday filed nomination papers for the final phase of Lok Sabha polls slated for April 24.Accompanied by several senior leaders, the former Union minister filed the nomination papers before the returning officer at 12 noon. Before that BJP took out a huge process across the city with the party candidate which ended at the DC office premises.Talking to reporters, she said that BJP’s victory is imminent. These papers would be scrutinized on Friday and the candidates are free to withdraw nomination by Sunday.Elections in Guwahati along with Nagaon, Dhubri, Barpeta, Mongoldoi will take place on April 7.
