The unnatural death of one more wild elephant calf at Bhutiachang tea garden in Udalguri district has caused concern among nature loving people.The two months old male wild elephant breathed its last at section No.20 of Bhutiachang tea garden from falling into a deep tea garden ditch on September 20. According to information the baby elephant fell into the ditch while a herd of wild elephants were crossing the ditches in the night of September 20. The helpless mother tried in vain to rescue the baby watching its tragic death.Forest personnel attended the site only at 9.30 am the next day on September 21 to see the calf dead. According to tea garden management they could not contact forest Range Officer for long hours. Local people and tea garden workers tried to rescue the baby, but the mother and the herd did not allow anybody to come nearer. Frequent deaths of wild elephants have now been a serious concern in the district. So far six wild elephants have been killed in the district.
