Anti Trafficking conclave ends: media & law enforcement lauded

The American Center, Kolkata in association with the Impulse NGO Network organized a three day  Anti Trafficking-in-Persons Conclave 3 titled Moving Forward Together in Guwahati between December 5 and 7. Several participants from India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Hong Kong and New York attended the conclave. The participants jointly examined and critiqued the national and international statuettes, protocols and provisions on trafficking in trend, the standard operating procedures between countries, the role of the civil societies, service providers, the law enforcement agencies, the legal eagles, the business industry, the stakeholders and the public in containing the rise of trafficking in persons.

During the conclave three law enforcement personnel and seven selected media practitioners were awarded tokens of recognitions and awards.

For the outstanding support extended by law enforcement personnel to curb trafficking, Mukesh Sahay, IPS, ADGP, CID, Guwahati, Assam, B. R. Rana, IPS, IGP (CID), Meghalaya and Miranda Ingtipi, APS, ASP, CID, Assam were awarded the Impulse Model’s Token of Recognition while Sein Win (Myanmar), Kunal Majumder, Thomas Lim, Editor, Meghalaya Times, Mrinal Talukdar, Joint Editor, DY365, Amit Patro, Editor, Sikkim Express, Syed Sajjad Ali, Editor, Indigenous Herald and the Editor, Arunachal Times were awarded The Impulse Model’s Media Awards for Change Makers for their  reportage on human trafficking.

The conclave at the end came up with an action plan to expedite anti trafficking in persons in Northeast India and the adjoining countries. Hasina Kharbhih, Chair of Board, Impulse NGO Network, Bijo Fancis, Executive Director, Asian Human Rights Commission & Asian Legal Resource Center and P.M. Nair, IPS, Former DG, NDRF presented The Anti Trafficking-in-Persons Conclave 3::Moving Forward Together Draft Action Plan.

The Action Plan in a nutshell resolved to review, revisit and apply the Impulse and UNODC Handbook on Anti Human Trafficking Units (AHTUs), organize a conference of the AHTUs in Northeast India, replicate and take the AHTUs forward (Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar and Bhutan), develop a model for Capacity Building to empower policing, codify and document innovative methods of psychological and trauma counseling, revisit and take forward bilateral standard operating procedures, develop standard operating procedures for telephone and video conferencing trials (following the Nepal-India and Bangladesh-India Test Cases), organize a colloquium/conference/workshop on Conflict & Calamities, adopt technological support to counter Trafficking-in-Persons, seek involvement of Human Rights Commissions, seek connectivity with China and Myanmar and solicit the partnership of the Corporate Sector.

The US Consul General for Eastern India and the state and country representatives of UNCTAD and UNODC were also present during the conclave.

Wildlife could drop two-thirds by 2020: WWF

WWF’s Living Planet Report 2016 predicts decline of global wildlife populations by an average of 67 per cent in the timeline between 1970 and 2020, as a result of human activities.
