JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

BJP workers in Namrup unhappy with Naharkatiya MLA

NAMRUP: A group of BJP leaders and workers openly expressed displeasure with AGP MLA Naren Sonowal, who allegedly has not been listening to them. At a booth level meeting in Namrup, the party's local leaders alleged that Sonowal has not been doing enough for them during the last one and a half years. Since the 17 year old pugilist from Dhekiajuli was put in the ring at the packed Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Sarusajai in the evening people in large number in the BTAD areas came out to the street and as she emerged winner defeating her Russian rival they started the huge celebrating dancing, singing, feasting and bursting of firecrackers. Minutes after she struck gold, BTAD chief Hagrama Mohilary announced ₹5lakh to the young pugilist congratulating her. Same message has come from ABSU president Pramod Boro, Rajya Sabha member UG Brahma.

Angkushita wows the world with gold

sGUWAHATI: The wait is over. Angkushita Boro has fetched huge pride for India striking gold in the AIBA youth boxing world championship in Guwahati on Sunday.The promising pugilist from Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur defeated her Russian rival Dynnik Ekateria in the packed Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium at Sarusajai in the evening.Thousands of people from across the state thronged the venue to catch a glimpse of the rare battle for gold. Assam chief minister Sarbanand Sonowal was among those who enjoyed the clash where Angkushita had the last laugh. He was quick to congratulate the young pugilist minutes after she was declared gold medalist.

Jail for former Cong minister's son in APSC scam

GUWAHATI:A special court in Guwahati on Sunday remanded Rajarshi Sen Deka to custody after the arrested ACS officer was produced before it. The special operation unit set up to probe the scam produced the son of former minister Nilomoni Sen Deka before the court as the police custody ended on Saturday. Deka surrendered before the police nearly a week after he was remaining underground.

Five killed as vehicle collides head on bus

IMPHAL:Five people died and another sustained serious injury when the vehicle carrying them collided head on a bus in Thoubal district of Manipur on Saturday. The incident took place on the Thoubal-Yarpai Road in the afternoon when six people including the bridegroom were on their way back to home after attending the wedding party. Suddenly, the driver of the car was believed to have lost his control over his vehicle which collided head on a mini bus which was coming from the opposite direction. Four persons including the bridegroom died on the spot while another succumbed to injuries at the hospital. Another injured is battling for life at the hospital.

NDFB-P threatens to pull out of peace process

KOKRAJHAR: NDFB(P) has threatened to pull out of the peace process with the Centre if the security forces keep arresting their rebels under ceasefire. The Bodo rebel outfit who struck peace deal with the government a couple of years back warned it hours after CRPF jawans based in Mazbat arrested one of their fellow rebels B Khobam from his rented house at Bapuji Nagar in Udalguri on Friday. Publicity secretary SSangjarang in a statement called the arrest a violation of the ceasefire pact with the Centre since the security forces did not take necessary permission from the authority.
