JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Another rebel ambush on army

As many as five army jawans are believed to have sustained injury when suspected ULFA-I and NSCN-K jointly attacked a vehicle in Atunachal Pradesh on Wednesday. The attack took place in midnight at Longding area along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. According to information, the rebels hiding atop a hillock started indiscriminate firing as soon as the army vehicle was crossing the spot. Army jawans also retaliated with firing. Notably, a group of dreaded rebels are believed to have been hiding in the huge area targetting security forces since November.

Prez calls NE astalakhi

President Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday stressed sustainable development in the north eastern region. In his opening speech in Parliament, Mukherjee called the north east Astalakhi and said the region has immense potentials to help the entire nation develop. Gautom Roy grilled

An anti corruption unit of Assam police grilled Gautom Roy on Monday in connection with the Rs 2000 crore scam in the social welfare department during the erstwhile Tarun Gogoi government.As directed, the former social welfare minister reached the anti corruption and vigilance cell office in Rupnagar at 10 in the morning to be grilled by a team of officers for a couple of hours.Roy was summoned a week after the team grilled Akon Bora, who was social welfare minister when the multi crore scam took place.

Uproar in the Assam assembly

Assam legislative assembly got underway in Dispur amid a story note on Monday. Opposition Congress and AIUDF did not allow governor Banwarilal Purohit to complete his speech to mark the start of the session which will end in March. Budget session begins

The Assam assembly has begun its budget session on Monday with Governor Banwarilal Purhit’s address outlining the major thrust of the Sarbananda Sonowal government. Gadkari pledges connectivity boost

Union surface transport minister Nitin Gadkari on Sunday announced 1253 km in the National Highway in a bid to bridge the yawning communication gap of Assam with the rest of the country.
