JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Amid a fresh barrage of controversy over the performance of Hindi songs in the Bihu functions, the United Liberation Front of Asom (I) on Tuesday warned the state artists to refrain from for performing in Hindi to keep the age old Assamese culture alive.  In a statement issued to Assam Times, ULFA-I C-in-C Paresh Baruah said that they will not tolerate Hindi songs on the Bihu stage at least for the first seven days and that if any artist fails to stick to it it they won't be responsible for any unexpected incident.   Baruah, in his statement welcomed the guidelines prepared by a conglomerate of Bihu celebration committees in the state.  But the state evokes sharp reaction...
Assam will go to the two or three phase assembly polls before April 10 next year. This was the impression of the full bench of the Election Commission which is on a two days visit to the poll bound state on Monday. The county’s poll panel has decided to hold the polls before Bohag Bihu when all political parties categorically told the Commission on Monday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will likely be visiting Assam in February with a slew of programmes lined up two months before the assembly polls. Talking to reporters in New Delhi, Tezpur MP RP Sarma said that he invited Modi to attend the Sankardev Sangha annual session at Sivasagar on February 8. Apart from it, Sarma urged the Prime Minister to launch the BPCL in Dibrugarh which would be ready by then. He said that Modi is expected to lay the corner stone of the AIIMS in North Guwahati.

Even after being slammed, Arunachal Pradesh Governor JP Rajkhowa is unprepared to go with the Gauhati High Court judgment. Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday accused Arunachal Pradesh Governor JP Rajkhowa of destabilizing the Congress government a day after the Gauhati High Court gave Nabam Tuki a huge relief. In a statement, Gogoi lambasted the Narendra Modi government at the centre alleging it an attempt to topple an elected popular government in the frontier state.
