JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

SK HASSAN, NAZIRA: BJP youth workers burnt Badaruddin Ajmal’s effigy in Nazira along with many parts of the state on Thursday for his alleged link with the jihadi elements in Bangladesh.Hundreds of BJYM activists thronged Nazira town in the evening and burnt the effigy of the AIUDF chief and demanded his arrest a few days after a satellite news channel broke the story citing a controversial report.

The Bajrang Dal sponsored 12 hour statewide Assam bandh evokes total response across the state from Friday morning. Security steps up for bandh

Amid the statewide 12 hour Assam bandh the authorities have stepped up security measures to ensure peace and normalcy on Friday. Bajrang Dal called the bandh in protest against the AIUDF's alleged links with jihadi and terror outfits in Bangladesh.Security forces are patrolling on the roads while additional forces have deployed in the vulnerable areas to prevent any untoward incident. Trains and flight services are, however, are running without any change in the schedule from early this morning.The state transport corporation is running a skeleton services in some places. Another arrest in Burdwan case

Police have arrested yet another person in connection with the Burdwan blast in West Bengal on October 2. Identified as Zarakia Ali, the businessman in Barpeta was picked up three days back to be arrested on Thursday after marathon interrogation at the Special Branch office at Kahilipara in Guwahati. Reliable sources told Assam Times that at least 30 people are wanted in this connection and that the arrest of 10 of them are crucial.

Homage to serial blast victims

Six years have passed since the gory serial blast on October 30 claimed at least 100 people in three places. But the memories are still fresh in the minds. ONGC operation to stop!

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Thursday threatened to stop ONGC operations alleging injustice to the state. An angry chief minister told reporters in New Delhi that he was extremely unhappy with the oil and gas giant.He alleged that Gujarat gets market price for the crude oil produced there from ONGC while Assam has not been receiving the same treatment. “We cannot tolerate these.
