JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Border tense as 9 bodies found

 Tension seems to have mounted in Golaghat district along the Assam-Nagaland border where nine more bodies were found on Friday three days after the Naga miscreants attacked the local residents in Uriamghat. Sources confirmed that all the local residents were killed in the recent indiscriminate firing and arson in eight villages. Most of them were believed to have killed in arson when the miscreants torched at least 200 houses forcing over thousand people to leave their houses in Uriamghat area. Economic blockade continues

The surface communication between Assam and Nagaland has come a grinding halt because of the economic blockade against the neighbouring state in protest against the Uriam Ghat incident where 11 people lost their lives.   The indefinite economic blockade Nagaland imposed by some organisations at Rangajan area along National Highway 39 in Golaghat district entered fourth day on Saturday affecting supplies to Dimapur town. AASAA workers also have been staging an indefinite economic blockade at Haluwating in Amguri against Nagaland.  

Ex gratia for victims’ kins

 The Assam Government will pay ex­gratia of Rs 8 lakh each to the next of kin of the victims. According to information, Dispur has asked the district administration to visit camps to prepare a list of missing persons and correlate the data with the recovered bodies to ascertain if any person was still missing. The authorities have increased the number relief camps with more and more panic stricken people leaving their homes on Friday. /

Concern over border on the boil

 Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi expressed grave concern over the violence along the Assam­Nagaland border where the miscreants from the neighbouring state killed at least 11 people on Tuesday. In his Independence Day after the ceremonial hoisting of the national tricolor at the Veterinary Playground on Friday, Gogoi said that the government had taken all possible steps for restoration of peace and normalcy in the affected areas. He said that a slew of initiatives are on the cards for resolution of the issues through discussion between the two states at the chief secretary level.

I-Day celebration peaceful

 Amid tight security the Independence Day celebration is over across the state on Friday. The day long celebrations passed off peacefully. There is no report of any incident during the celebrations of the red letter day.Braving an inclement weather in the morning people in large  number came out to the public places to hoist the national tricolor.Chief minister Tarun Gogoi unfurled the national flag at the Khanapara Veterinary Playground in the morning and took salute of the army, police, para military forces, NCC, scouts and guides.Reports of peaceful celebrations of the big historic day are pouring in from different places across the state with a series o cultural programmes....

Arsonists caught amid curfew

 Normalcy is yet to be restored along the Assam-Nagaland border in Golaghat district. Indefinite curfew is in force from 6 in the evening to 6 in the morning. Security forces on Friday caught three arsonists red-handed when they allegedly tried to torch some abandoned houses in Chetiagaon. Three additional CRPF companies have been fanning in the affected areas to thwart any attempt by the miscreants who have been unleashing terror these days. According to sources, eight new pickets had been set up by the CPRF in vulnerable villages. A control room has is being jointly manned by CRPF, Assam Police and Nagaland Police. National flag fluttering in the sky

 Defying an inclement weather national flags are fluttering in the sky across the state on Friday on the 68-th Independence Day. People of all walks of life are celebrating the Day with much pomp and gaiety from the morning. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi led the state in the celebration of the red letter day. Braving incessant rains, Gogoi unfurled the national tricolor at the veterinary Playground in Khanapara at 9 in the morning before taking the salute of the police, army, para military forces. Gogoi unfurls national flag in Guwahati

 Braving incessant rains people thronged in thousands at the Veterinary Playground in Khanapara on Friday morning to celebrate the Independence Day where chief minister Tarun Gogoi hoisted the national tricolor. Amid tight security measures, Gogoi, his wife Dolly Gogoi along with many prominent persons arrived in the playground at 8-30 in the morning.

AASU ends hunger strike

The All Assam Students' Union activists have ended the 12 hour long hunger strike in Guwahati demanding immediate steps to implement the Assam Accord in letter and spirit. The AASU activists ended the hunger strike as soon as chief minister Tarun Gogoi hoisted the national tricolor at the Veterinary Playgorund in Guwahati. AASU leaders told Assam Times that the government has yet to fulfill the promises made by it in the historic Accord 29 years ago. “That’s why, we want a time-bound action-plan from the government regarding the implementation of the clauses of the Assam Accord,” they said

Gogoi- Zeliang talks on Aug 21

The simmering tension along the Assam-Nagaland border is all set to figure when Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is meeting his Nagaland counterpart T R Zeliang in Guwahati next week. Sources told Assam Times that the Nagaland Chief Minister is scheduled to visit Guwahati on August 21 where both the chief minister will discuss the issue.
