JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Construction engineer kidnapped

 Days of uneasy situations are back to Dima Hasao district. Unidentified miscreants kidnapped a construction project manager at gunpoint on Tuesday. Identified as Niron Kumar Mahajan , the top official of the Kolkata-based construction company was abducted near Hathikhuli under Langting police station in the morning. The construction company was engaged in widening of a four-lane project between Hatikhuli and Mandadisa. Security forces are on a combing operation to rescue the 48 year officer.

4 held on extortion charge

 Tinsukia police arrested four persons for allegedly extorting money from tea garden authorities in the name of ULFA on Tuesday. The fake ULFA militants were nabbed from Dholla in Tinsukia when they arrived in the tea garden office to extort money. Gogoi seeks new oil royalty mechanism

  Chief minister Tarun Gogoi wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s seeking his intervention to direct the oil PSUs to change the royalty payment mechanism. Sources told Assam Times that the chief minister urged Modi to ask the petroleum ministry to give appropriate instructions to ONGC and OIL to pay royalty, VAT and other state taxes to Assam. He further demanded royalty at pre-discounted price of crude oil with effect from February 1 2014 as ordered by Supreme Court in case of Gujarat. Gogoi has pointed out that ONGC and OIL are liable to pay royalty on crude oil at 20% of the well-head price, in addition to VAT at 5% and other state taxes.

Japanese encephalitis toll mounts to 80

The killer Japanese Encephalitis and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome continue to wreak havoc in the state. Japanese Encephalitis toll mounts to 80 There seems to be no respite from Japanese Encephalitis. The killer disease has so far claimed 88. The worst affected district is Sivsagar where the death toll has gone up to 10. Assam stresses skill development

 Dispur is understood to gave sought the Centre's technical support to set up skill development training centres to help the youth to increase their employability quotient and find jobs outside the state. This was what the Industries and Commerce Minister Pradyut Bordoloi wrote to Union Skill Development and Youth Affairs Minister Sarbananda Sonowal seeking help from the Centre's National Skill Development Corporation to set up such training centres in every development block in the state. CII submits pre budget memo

The Confederation of Indian Industry has reiterated on taxation, policy and administrative issues and also on issues mandating special provisions in the state budget. In its a pre-budget memorandum to the state government, CII recommended that the state should focus on raising revenue without widening the tax net and simplifying the tax procedures. Tinsukia tense after Tezu murder

 Tension seems to have escalated in Tinsukia district a day after miscreants from Arunachal Pradesh lynched a local youth on Sunday allegedly for falling in love with a girl of the neighbouring state.  Dissident Congress legislators are trying their level best to corner the Tarun Gogoi government in the upcoming assembly budget session. Led by the outgoing education minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, the dissidents are scheduled to meet in Dispur on August---just 2 days before the assembly session to formulate their strategies. Reshuffle after budget session

 Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is arriving in Guwahati on Monday a day after he met Congress president Sonia Gandhi. But he is not in a hurry to reshuffle his cabinet. Sources told Assam Times that the chief minister is likely to reshuffle his cabinet only after the budget session. Gogoi on Sunday evening is believed to have told Congress president Sonia Gandhi that the cabinet reshuffle before the assembly session would encourage the dissident camp where those left out of the cabinet might take their side.
