JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

 Hours after he was dropped from the council of ministers, Siddique has threatened to go all out against chief minister Tarun Gogoi. He said that he was unfazed at Gogoi’s action against him for helping Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma. He said he would now speak out without any fear or favour. An earthquake of mild intensity rocked Guwahati and its adjoining areas on Wednesday.The mild quake was felt at around 4-30 in the morning.The quake pressed panic button among the people in Guwahati were a section of the people in the high rise buildings started coming out to the streets. Governor JB Patnaik approved Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's recommendation to drop Ardhendu Dey and Siddeque Ahmed from the council of ministers. Patnaik further cleared Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma’s resignation acting on Gogoi’s recommendation.  
Caught in a grim crisis, chief minister Tarun Gogoi gets more tougher with the dissident ministers. Gogoi on Tuesday dropped ministers Siddique Ahmed and Ardhendu Dey a day after dissident leader Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma put in his papers as education and health minister. The chief minister dropped the duo from his council of ministers for publicly taking on him and supporting dissident activities. This may follow action against the duo from the party high command.     
 Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma’s resignation has been accepted. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi has suggested Governor JB Patnaik to accept the health and education minister’s resignation leter he submitted on Monday. Dr Sarma on Monday put in his papers saying that he was not physically and mentally prepared to work under Tarun Gogoi as chief minister. After the receipt of the letter, Gogoi sent the letter to the party high command seeking final seal of approval. 
 Normalcy is back to Rangapara town a day after the Sonitpur administration imposed curfew following a clash between police and protestor. Talking to Assam Times, district administration officials said that curfew has been lifted from 10 in the morning on Tuesday. The district administration was maintaining a strict vigil to prevent any further incidents. Indefinite curfew was clamped after police lathicharged protesters, who were holding a road blockade demanding improvement in communication facilities to the place.  The agitators, comprising 25 organisations were protesting alleging pathetic condition of the Misamari-Balipara road.
 Japanese Encephalitis continues to wreak havoc in the state where the death toll has gone up to 52. Barpeta district remains worst affected after the death toll has gone up to eight apart from the rise in then number of confirmed positive cases which stands at 54. Barpeta is followed by the rural Kamrup district with 34 cases. Four patients died. Darrang, Sivasagar and Nalbari have all registered six deaths. Nalbari has recorded 20 confirmed positive cases while Kamrup (metro) district has recorded 31 positive cases but no deaths so far.  Chief minister Tarun Gogoi is preparing to accept Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma’s resignation a day after the education and health minister quitted the cabinet. Reliable sources told Assam Times that the chief minister has sent the copy of Dr Sarma’s resignation letter to AICC conveying his decision to accept it. Dr Sarma put in his papers on Monday saying that he was not prepared to work under Tarun Gogoi as chief minister.
 The dissident ministers and MLAs are running the risk of stern action from the party high command. State Congress committee on Monday has urged the AICC to take stern action against outgoing education and health minister alleging anti party activities. APCC along with 13 ministers have jointly urged the party leadership to take action against the dissident MLAs and ministers who accompanied Dr Sarma in his journey to the Raj Bhawan. The Gogoi camp finalized their strategies after they met at the residence of social welfare minister Akon Bora.
