All India Patriotic Forum, Assam branch on Saturday remembered Umesh Chandra Devchoudhury, who joined the Indian National Army (Azad Hind Fauj) under the leadership of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in 1943 and fought many battles for the motherland. Probably the last INA soldier from Assam, Devchoudhury passed away on December 11, 2013 at his residence in Patacharkuchi of lower Assam. A Lieutenant of INA, Devchoudhury maintained an active life till his demise at the age of 97.
In a formal memorial meeting held in Guwahati Press Club various speakers highlighted the spirit of patriotism shown by Devchoudhury and his colleagues who led an eventful struggle in various south and southeast Asian places like Singapore, Rangoon, Arakan front etc. With his sincerity and commitment, Devchoudhury elevated himself up to the level of Lieutenant in INA and led his troop against the British imperial forces mostly on the India-Myanmar border in 1944 to make India an independent nation.
Speakers including freedom fighters Jatin Goswami & Ganesh Chandra Das, Prof Rabin Devchoudhury, Ajay Dutta, Jaharlal Saha, Umakanta Bhattacharya, Jagadindra Raichoudhury, Rupma Barua, Hiten Mahanta, Nava Thakuria, KN Devchoudhury, Pramod Kalita etc paid their heartiest tributes to the departed soul.
Before the meeting, floral tributes were also paid to Devchoudhury and two patriotic songs ‘Bande Mataram----’and ‘O Mor Aponar Desh ----’were also sung by the participants in the memorial meeting.
Luitpar Club in Narengi Campus of Oil India Limited recently organized a unique initiative for encouraging reading habit among the residents, primarily the young people in the colony. The club supplied various books in Assamese, English, Hindi and Bengali language to the households under Rasaraj Lakshminath Bezbaruah mobile library. The program was launched by journalist Nava Thakuria on 21 July in presence of Luitpar Club president, its secretary Narayan Majumder, senior members including Padmeswar Kalita, Haren Sarma, Jadav Kalita, Tapas Bhattacharya, Hira Rajbongshi etc.

The Assam State Human Rights Commission has asked the government to probe the recent police firing in Raha where a local protester was killed. A division bench of the panel comprising Dr Justice AH Saikia and Tarun Phookan issued notice to the Chief Secretary to get the probe done by an officer of the rank of secretary and to submit the findings within the next 30 days.A local protestor Mintu Deori was killed and several others sustained serious injury when police opened fire on a group of protestors at Raha who tried to enforce a bandh on July 16 demanding the proposed AIIMS in the area.

The ongoing Assam Assembly session is all set to start from 9-30 from Wednesday instead of 9 in the morning. The proposal was unanimously passed on the floor after parliamentary affairs minister Chandra Mohan Patowary moved the proposal. Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Das announced the slight change in the timings which will come into force from Wednesday. The concluding time is 2 in the afternoon. But on Friday, the morning session will end at 11.30 in the morning while the evening session will be from 3 to 5 in the afternoon.

An escalating tension in Raha got no less prominence in the Assam Assembly on its day one of the budget session on Monday. The Opposition cornered the Sonowal Government alleging its failure to properly deal with the situation.
